Charlottesville Track Club Marathon training program

Thursday May 26, 2005

Last night I attended the kickoff meeting for the Summer 2005 Marathon training club that is part of the Charlottesville Track Club. Wow. What a nice group of folks attending and running the meeting. Runners are indeed good generous kind people always looking to bring along a newbie.

For $20, I'm going to get an experienced marathon coach that is going to tailor a running program just for me. That is like a $200 value. I can't wait to get paired up with some similairly skilled runners and do the long saturday runs. (I'll certainly keep the blog up to date)

The only catch (and it isn't probably too bad) is that each person is asked to captain one of the long runs, meaning go out and mark the course and set out the water coolers before the 6:15am runs... There are 13 weeks and 140 runners so not everyone will end up having to be a captain, but will get the benefit of a marked course, water/gatorade (thanks pepsi guys) every week.

The other cool thing about the meeting was at the end, the talk focused on last years marathons. It seems that the 2004 session went on to run 28 different marathons and many of those folks were returning for this session. The Richmond Marathon (my choice this year) was given high marks for ease of packet pickup and logistics and scenic nice course. Philly was discussed as a good one as well as Disney. Marine Corp was said to be too big to be a nice run. Many runners got blisters and hotspots as they never really hit there stride zigging in and out of the crowds (of other runners). Also heard that Paris was great but it was short on bathrooms. This is going to be fun.
