NumLocks: if you can't laugh at yourself...
Wednesday Nov 16, 2005
For weeks I thought my 2 year old laptop was on its leg. I was having the worse issue when NOT connected to my desktop keyboard.
t see0s that 0y n4036c2s 2ey 6n 0y 3a*t6* was st4c2 5n the 6n *6s5t56n.
It seems that my numlocks key on my laptop was stuck in the on position. The sentence above is an example of what my typing looked like. I did blog entries where I would type in StarOffice Writer and do search and replace on the keys that didn't work. Note - the keys would work if I held down the FN (function key) on my left hand and hit the needed key at the same time...
I had tried tons of stuff, bitched to my boss about the quality of my equipment, priced new laptops, everything short of depressing for the second time my NumLock key.
This wasn't a once and out thing, it has been going on for weeks, maybe months. On a recent trip to New York, I took my homeoffice keyboard. I was so depressed about this.
I decided to subject myself to possible ribbing of my SE buddies, so I asked an innocent question only to have my hero, Leroy Kelley save the day.
He tried to spare me any ridicule saying that he had the same issue just the week before. Granted his issue didn't last for 5 or more day long trips around the US... It didn't take long before my buddy Cullen started to beat me verbally about my technology abilities. I tried to cover things over but finally agreed to tell the whole story because if you can't laugh at your own mistakes, who can you laugh at...

Thanks for making this post. My keys wouldn't work...
