People manager best practice
Friday May 30, 2008
I'm pretty pleased with a recent development in my people manager toolkit. I'm a Mac guy and recently purchased the software, Bento, which is kind of MS Access for the Mac.
I have 11 folks on my team and have a failing memory at points. I realized that I wasn't evenly spreading my time and checking in with the guys, so I created (pointed/clicked/dragged/dropped) a small application that extends the phonebook and updates a notes field. In that note field, I add date (in 05/30 - recapped on blah) with comments. When I sync my phone, it is then on my phone. I have a view of the team and can click on the last contact field and sort by date and realize that I haven't spoken to Fred in 10 days...
I don't count emails, team calls or voicemails. I think I was operating in a "10 out of 11" model for a while and I can't/won't say who was the one...
This change and small application really gives me a feeling that I'm on the same page as the team and no one is getting left behind.
