Review of Nike Free 5.0
Thursday May 19, 2005
Like you, I have read about all of the great runners that ran or run now barefoot. I'm pretty soft of foot so the idea of running without shoes didn't really appeal to me. I totally believe the thing about your feet are stronger as well as your legs if you allow your feet to flex and move as nature intended. So when Nike started advertising the Nike Free, I was interested.
I couldn't bring myself to buy sight unseen, so I waited for a business trip to San Fran so I could go to NikeTown. Any requests in my local running store (Ragged Mountain Running (story for another day)) drew blank stares or nods like "Sure they do."
So the big day when I finally got toe to shoe with the much hypied shoe and they were so ugly... They were also comfortable in that new shoe kind of way, yet odd in the way they flexed. I picked the lessor of evils and got the bright reds ones. Better than the mustard yellow I thought.
The reading material inside advised only wearing them for an hour or two to start and build up to actually running in them. I started slow and all was good. Since the weather has warmed up this spring in Virginia AND I have the Nike Free, I can't say for certain that they have really helped me; but I swear my feet and legs are indeed stronger. The shoes are great lightweight (little support) running shoes. The ads shows the runners in the shoes with no socks. Great for them, but I still have a blister from about 2 weeks back from running with no socks.
The way the soles are cut allows your foot to really move and flex and doesn't provide the "safety" of normal shoes. If you have been on the fence on these or find yourself in a rut looking for an out, give the Nike Free's a try... Hey, it is only like $90 or so. You could be a smoker or have boating for a hobby instead of running.
