The new cash - gift cards...

Tuesday Jun 03, 2008

All the kids teachers this year are getting the huge stack of gift cards that I went out today and picked up. What an easy way to show our thanks and I recall as a kid that my Mom was a teacher and we got tons of coffee mugs and little stuffed animals. How much better is a Barnes & Noble gift card? Loads.

Can't say I agree. I'd much rather have something that somebody picked out for me, even if I didn't particularly like it-- it still shows they took some time and effort to go and buy something personal. Gift cards are just a lazy option IMHO.

(That said, in the 13 years I was at school I don't recall any teacher getting anything from any of the kids-- it's their *job* to teach us stuff!)

All I can say is that your comment is pretty heartless. I guess SW also feels that police officers, military and of course teachers shouldn't get paid that much either. Security and education are two of the most important jobs, show your appreciation!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???????? WOW!

By the way....the 'personal' things that people usually pick out for their teachers usually are cheap, break or fall apart.... (although...The things that are handmade or homemade are also very much appreciated)My mother has been a teacher her whole life and a little appreciation goes a long way. A gift card for the same amount would be appreciated much more and go a lot further....there is no need to waste money on something that will end up in the trash...spend your money wisely.....

It's true. Gift cards are popular as well as a huge business for retailers. I work for a company that manages and tracks gift cards, and we blogged about gift cards issues on savvywallet.com. Consider this though: Last year $100B was spent on gift cards and around $8B was lost/unclaimed. Before you get excited, make sure you spend it first! Nothing is worse that going into BN, realizing that once upon a time a gift card was in your wallet.
