Hey Folks! We had a great turnout for our SDN Chat with the amazing writers from java.sun.com. We were lucky enough to have Ed Ort, Janice Heiss, Dana Nourie, and Laureen Hudson in-world with us today. Transcript is below.

Have a great Valentine's Day everyone! :)

[10:03] You: Hello and welcome to today's SDN Chat: Meet the Writers of
java.sun.com. I'm Heidi Dailey, Program Manager for Sun's Developer
Events in Second Life.

[10:03] You: It is my great pleasure to introduce our panel today. They
are Edward Ort, Dana Nourie, Jan Heiss, and Laureen Hudson.

[10:04] You: I'm going to let them tell you a bit more about themselves
in a moment. But before I do, I want to go over our ground rules.

[10:04] You: The first portion of this event will be Q and A style with
me asking the panel a few questions. After that, I'll open it up to
questions from the audience. When I do, and if you have a question,
please type "@" in your chat line. I will call on you in turn. Once I
do, please go ahead with your question.

[10:04] You: Finally, you'll notice behind me a very special promotion
for today's attendees. I'm very pleased to announce that all of you will
be getting one of three new titles from SMI Press. This is the first
time we've offered this to our chat attendees and we hope you'll take
advantage of the offer. Just a little thank you and Happy Valentines Day
from us. :) Okay, I'm going to turn it over to Ed to introduce himself
first.

[10:05] Jargon Jarman: Hi. I'm a writer focusing mostly on enterpris
Java topics.

[10:05] Jargon Jarman: I'm now starting to do more articles about Java
on handheld devices like cellphones and PDAs.

[10:06] Dana Oceanlane: I am staff writer for java.sun.com . . .

[10:06] Dana Oceanlane: I also maintain the New to Java Programming
Center, the Java SE hub, and the Tech Days website

[10:07] Dana Oceanlane: In addition, I edit and write for the
Fundamentals, a newsletters we send out through blogs

[10:07] JaniceHeiss SunMicrosystems: Hi I'm Jan Heiss In addition to
exploring the world of Java technology -- and getting to interview many
Java technology luminaries and unsung heroes -- as a staff writer for
Sun, I’m a published writer of fiction and non-fiction and have written
and performed for the stage, including stand-up comedy. I’m also a
published writer of fiction and non-fiction, have written and performed
for the stage, and have done stand-up comedy. (What does a hungry
vegetarian say? “I could eat a tree.”)

[10:07] You: Laureen go ahead

[10:08] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: My name's Laureen, I'm an editor
on java.sun.com and developers.sun.com

[10:08] Scooter Back: lol, she repeated herself

[10:08] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: I also do a lot of work with blogs

[10:08] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: HA! No, not really

[10:08] You: Okay

[10:08] You: so the first question I have for you folks

[10:09] You: is what was the most interesting story of 2007?

[10:09] Dana Oceanlane: I did a neat story this year with NASA . . .

[10:10] Dana Oceanlane: It was on a project called WordWind

[10:10] Dana Oceanlane: where they created a very cool software system
out of Java modules that developers can add to.

[10:10] You: Jan?

[10:10] JaniceHeiss SunMicrosystems: Hi there. Jan here: The most
interesting story of 2007 was called “Getting the Bugs Out: A
Conversation With Bug Fixer Brian Harry”
I interviewed Brian, an Iowa Java developer who is legendary for his
ability to find and fix bugs. He won a prestigious Duke's Choice award
for outstanding Java platform contributions in 2006. His method was
simple: He scanned Sun's openly available bug database for intriguing
bugs, primarily in the Swing user interface (UI) code, printed them out,
and put the bug reports on a stack beside his computer. Then, he fixed
them one by one, submitting them through the standard JDK Community
contribution process. He just loved to solve problems involving bugs and
has a great gift for it.

[10:11] You: Cool.

[10:11] You: Ed?

[10:11] Jargon Jarman: To me the most interesting story wasBlu-ray disc.
...

[10:12] You: Ed having techno difficulties

[10:12] You: So Laureen, what was favorite story of 2007?

[10:12] Jargon Jarman: This is

[10:13] You: Ed's back

[10:13] You: go ahead

[10:13] You: Just kidding.....Ed is toast and logging off

[10:13] You: he'll be right back

[10:13] You: L?

[10:13] pnc Blessed: @

[10:13] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: My favorite stories, because I'm
an editor, involve the backchannel stuff.

[10:13] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: Getting us moved from email to
blogs was a HUGE tale...

[10:14] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: we had drama, we had mayhem, we
had presentations and statistics and it was GREAT!

[10:14] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: unfortunately, all you guys see
is that we did it. =) =)

[10:14] Rissa Maidstone grins.

[10:14] You: I was there....it was mayhem

[10:14] You: :)

[10:14] You: PNC?

[10:14] pnc Blessed: Yes I'm wondering if you can tell me your thoughts
on Glassfish

[10:15] You: pnc

[10:15] You: we'll get to that in a second

[10:15] Jargon Jarman is Offline

[10:15] You: once ed is back on

[10:15] pnc Blessed: :-)

[10:15] You: :)

[10:15] pnc Blessed: TY

[10:15] You: Okay

[10:15] You: so we talked about favorites

[10:15] You: let's talk about the harder stuff....

[10:16] You: what was the most difficult story to write in 2007?

[10:16] You: or "challenging"

[10:16] JaniceHeiss SunMicrosystems: Jan here: This is EZ difficult I
can talk difficult! The most difficult story was one I wrote recently
that provided an overview for Ruby and JRuby and other related
applications and languages. I had never written about Ruby, etc., -- and
it's always a learning process and challenging though I love it too but
at the beginning I always ask myself with fear and anxiety: “Can I
really do this?” -- and I had to learn a lot from scratch – and there
were few centralized sources of information, so I had to go all over the
place to get the information. Software technology changes so fast –
phew, what a ride!!

[10:17] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: I only wrote one actual story
last year, that was the JavaOne wrapup... try taking that much stuff and
cramming it into a few column inches! Insane! I skipped sleep for two
days on that..

[10:17] You: I hear ya Laureen! JavaOne is a rollercoaster!

[10:18] Jargon Jarman: I agree. The intersection of technologuies is
always difficult to write about. GlassFish, Ruby, ...

[10:18] You: Ok....so you guys get to meet a lot of techno celebs

[10:18] You: via interviews or at events

[10:19] You: so do you have any favorites?

[10:19] You: It's okay to name drop

[10:19] You: ;)

[10:19] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: My techno celeb is Chet Haase.
The guy really should be doing stand-up instead of programming. His blog
is here: http://chetchat.blogspot.com/

[10:20] Dana Oceanlane: I so agree!

[10:20] Jargon Jarman: I totally agree Laureen. I did a video interview
with Chet about 6 months ago (BTW, you can view it on the java.sun.com
videos page). ...

[10:20] JaniceHeiss SunMicrosystems: Most Compelling Techno-Celeb. It
has to be James Gosling, who I’ve either interviewed or covered at
JavaOne so many times. The range of his knowledge and expertise is
awesome – and he’s such a good guy! No one is more fun to be around. I'm
a total James fan. I write a lot of different kinds of articles -- I've
done a lot of interviews with leading Java developers, which are very
humbling and challenging. I've interviewed "Father of Java" James
Gosling several times and often get the impression he is so gifted at
thinking in code that making the transition to English is something of a
hassle for him.

[10:20] Jargon Jarman: Not only was it technically interesting and
depthy, but it was lots of fun.

[10:21] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: Jan does the Interview series, so
she's got ALL the best names to drop!

[10:21] Rissa Maidstone: lol I love this: Roses are red So is my blood,
gushing from multiple thorn wounds. Take your damn flowers.

[10:21] Jargon Jarman: BTW, in answer to Heidi's earlier quesation abotu
interesting stories ...

[10:21] Rissa Maidstone: Thanks Laureen :)

[10:21] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: I know! His stuff is soooooo
killer, and that's not even his programming stuff!

[10:21] Rissa Maidstone grins.

[10:21] Jargon Jarman: I'd have to say that it's really the medium not
the message. The techno universe has so many more ways of communicating
than it did in the past ...

[10:22] Jargon Jarman: Videos, blogs, podcasts -- we're not limited to
the traditional text measn of communicating.

[10:22] You: OKay, last question from me and then we'll open it up to
the audience

[10:22] You: What are you excited about (technology or product or
community) in 2008?

[10:22] Dana Oceanlane: Definitely the changes in NetBEans and how much
easier it is to use.

[10:23] Dana Oceanlane: I think in 2008 we're going to see a lot more
improvements in the way of ajax and servies

[10:23] Seiichi Wisent: NetBeans with Groovy support :)

[10:23] Dana Oceanlane: maybe so yeah

[10:23] Leyla Masala: arent those already here?

[10:23] Jargon Jarman: I'm excited about devices and the Java
applications we're goign to see int he future ...

[10:23] Rikart Freenote: thanks, vesuro

[10:24] Vesuro Destiny: I think I'm excited about the Java desktop platform

[10:24] Jargon Jarman: I mentioned Blu-ray disc a while ago. This allows
an ebnormous amount of high def content on a disc.

[10:24] Leyla Masala: id be a bit curious about javafx as well.. what
exactly is it trying to target?

[10:24] Jargon Jarman: 5-to-10 times as much content as on a standard
DVD. Java has a real play there -- interactive video based menus,..

[10:24] Jargon Jarman: games through the Blu-ray disc player. ...

[10:25] Jargon Jarman: The ability to download movies and trailers
through the playter ... All interestign stuff ..

[10:25] Jargon Jarman: anbd a lot of it driven by Java.

[10:25] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: DUDE! I am totally amped about
the discussions revolving around Digital Natives. I just did a rant on
my personal blog about how my five year old has figured out how to
appropriately tag YouTube videos, and that's something a lot of grownups
(you know, that I work with!) haven't figured out!
http://theexcellentadventure.com/elementalmom/2008/02/14/multimedia-and-what-a-five-year-old-knows/

[10:25] Vesuro Destiny: I think I'm interested to see how much of a
difference Java can make to desktop computing with the Sun Java desktop
now being shipped with Solaris

[10:25] JaniceHeiss SunMicrosystems: My answer is a bit more general and
self-interested as you will see here: In 2008 I will be exploring new
developments in the Java platform, interviewing Java Champions – leading
Java developers from throughout the world. And expanding my reach to
areas where Java is having an impact, as in JRuby. I’ll also be covering
Tech Days events in Australia , Russia , and the Philippines, all new
places for me. Travel – whoooopee!

[10:26] You: Okay

[10:26] You: so now I'm going to open the floor

[10:26] You: pnc had a question

[10:26] You: about glassfish

[10:26] pnc Blessed: :-)

[10:26] You: pnc please ask it again

[10:27] pnc Blessed: Ok - what are your thoughts on glassfish ?

[10:27] JayR Cela: @

[10:27] Jargon Jarman: GlassFish is reallyu becoming mainstream ...

[10:27] pnc Blessed is very excited about it

[10:27] Jargon Jarman: It's not relegated to the niche that open source
app servers used to hbe pigeon holed in. ...

[10:28] Jargon Jarman: Version 2 has great fetures like clusteriung that
make it a an excellent choice for real enterprise deployments. I just
wrote an article ...'

[10:28] Jargon Jarman: titled GlassFish v2: Open for Business that goes
over some of these nbew features.

[10:29] You: JayR...please ask your question

[10:29] JayR Cela: I understand that Net Beans & Jini are both
development enviorments / am I correct in the fact that Jini is geared
for Service Oiented bussines's where as Net Beans is not, And could you
explain the basic differences please ?

[10:29] Jargon Jarman: You're right that NetBeans is a development
environment ...

[10:30] Stitch Seale: @

[10:30] Jargon Jarman: I'll lket Dana talk more about that. However Jini
is a device and service discovery technology -- not a development
environment.

[10:30] Scooter Back: @

[10:30] JayR Cela: ahhhh thank you / now........

[10:31] Jargon Jarman: Jini and NetBeans can certainly be used for/in
ASOA applications, but it definitely not limited to SOA.

[10:31] JayR Cela: can Ruby or JRuby modules or components be easly
integrated into either or both

[10:32] Dana Oceanlane: Yes, you can use both Ruby and JRuby in Netbeans
easily now

[10:32] Dana Oceanlane: In fact, you even get code completion and other
nifty features

[10:32] JayR Cela: thank you :_)

[10:32] Whoops Babii: @

[10:32] Dana Oceanlane: You just need the plugin

[10:32] JayR Cela: :_) thanks

[10:32] Jargon Jarman: BTW, this underscores the fact that NetBeans is
not limited to Java applications -- it's a general app development tool.

[10:32] You: Scooter...go ahead and ask your question

[10:32] Scooter Back: I just finished my first college class in which we
learned the basics of Java and IDE/GUI development. Is there any way to
begin more simply with the language? Or am I forced to learn about
streams/forms/listeners right away?

[10:32] JayR Cela: OK

[10:33] Stitch Seale: ?!!!

[10:33] Stitch Seale: @!!

[10:33] Dana Oceanlane: Yes, you can go to the New to Java Center, which
will point you where to start

[10:33] Scooter Back: it was way over my head, I barely passed the class

[10:33] Dana Oceanlane: The Java Tutorial is great for learning the nuts
and bolts

[10:33] Dana Oceanlane: plus be sure to check out Java Fundamentals, as
that teaches those basics as well
[10:34] You: You can also go to http://developers.sun.com/students?

[10:34] Seiichi Wisent: I would also suggest javapassion.com with free
Java online courses

[10:34] You: oops

[10:34] Scooter Back: cool, thanks!

[10:34] You: http://developers.sun.com/students/

[10:34] You: Stich has informed me that I skipeed him

[10:34] Scooter Back: I'm scared to take more classes until I can
understand the one I just took

[10:34] Dana Oceanlane: http://java.sun.com/new2java/

[10:34] You: so Stich...go ahead

[10:34] Stitch Seale: Did you really saw a groth for Developers working
on Solaris this year? Is it becoming more intersting for developers to
use Solaris?

[10:35] Stitch Seale: ty, heidi

[10:35] Dana Oceanlane: Christine, can you take that Solaris question

[10:36] Christine Thursday: Yes, since SXDE came out with developer
tools included there has been a spike in interest.

[10:36] You: Christine Sterner is the managing editor for the solaris hub

[10:36] Vesuro Destiny: Where does Sun see Java progressing to, with
regards to applications development?

[10:36] You: and we are fortunatle to have her in the room!

[10:36] Rikart Freenote: Solaris is a great OS for development in any
language. Or are you talking about developing FOR Solaris?

[10:37] Whoops Babii is Offline

[10:37] Christine Thursday: SXDE 1/08 has a web application stack, SAMP
including Ruby and other programming tools.

[10:37] Stitch Seale: ON solaris..

[10:37] Jargon Jarman: With the announcement of JavaFX -- a brand and a
family of products -- you'll see a lot more focus on ...

[10:37] Jargon Jarman: Java applicxxation development for folks who are
not professional programmers ...

[10:37] Vesuro Destiny: @

[10:38] Jargon Jarman: Think easy fast prototyping and develpment by
cotnet creators -- a more Flash-lioke development environment. That's
the goal for Java FX.

[10:38] Stitch Seale: thank you

[10:38] Rikart Freenote: I wrote an article on Developing Java
Applications on the Solaris OS recently

[10:38] You: Vesuro, go ahead and ask your question

[10:38] JaniceHeiss SunMicrosystems: Re: Solaris, here's some helpful
urls I think and also there is a new artifcle or should be one up for
Solaris onthe devleopers Solaris hub that discusses this: Solaris
Express Developer Edition(http://developers.sun.com/sxde/index.jsp)
(SXDE) Installing

[10:38] Rikart Freenote: Here's the
URL:http://developers.sun.com/solaris/articles/java_on_solaris.html

[10:39] Stitch Seale: thanks to all!!

[10:39] Vesuro Destiny: Where does Sun see the future of Java in
applications development?

[10:40] Seiichi Wisent: @

[10:40] Vesuro Destiny: My perception would be that Java Desktop is
hopefully the start of a new era in that field

[10:40] Muslima Questi: @

[10:40] Jargon Jarman: Is your question about Java or about Java Desktop?

[10:41] Vesuro Destiny: Java Desktop's impact upon Java

[10:41] Vesuro Destiny: as an applications development language

[10:41] Rikart Freenote: I think that the official line is that Sun will
go where the market goes. sun is commited to Java, but if people want to
script in Ruby, Sun will suppor them.

[10:42] Jargon Jarman: Rikart, yes. Remmber the VM Sun offers is not
limited to Java.

[10:42] Leyla Masala: what does it currently additionally support?

[10:42] Jargon Jarman: Leyla, you mean what the VM supports?

[10:43] Leyla Masala: yes, you said more than java

[10:43] Jargon Jarman: Certainly Ruby is supported.

[10:43] You: Vesuro, looks like we don't have a full answer for you

[10:43] Rikart Freenote: Yes, and there's some talk of changing the JVM
moniker to just VM

[10:43] You: Can you friend me and I'll find an answer or a reference
for you?

[10:44] You: Seiichi, go ahead and ask your question

[10:44] Seiichi Wisent: there's plenty of languages for JVM, please have
a look over here: http://www.robert-tolksdorf.de/vmlanguages.html

[10:44] You: thanks Seiichi!

[10:44] Seiichi Wisent: my question is: Do you have any plans to publish
some articles about internationalization (i18n)? Maybe using NetBeans?

[10:44] Dana Oceanlane: That's a great idea

[10:45] Dana Oceanlane: I will look into this more for you, as I know
it's an important. Do a search on NetBeans, as they may have a tutorial
already too.

[10:45] Seiichi Wisent: it is a very niche problem :)

[10:45] Jargon Jarman: Are you talking specifical about
internationalization from an API point of view, articles abotu that, ...

[10:46] Jargon Jarman: or translations of English articles into another
language?

[10:46] Rikart Freenote: There was a lot of info on i18n for Java Studio
Creator, and I'm sure that much of that technology has been applied to
NetBeans. Sun does need to provide more info.

[10:46] Seiichi Wisent: I mean GUI internationalization

[10:47] Dana Oceanlane: Yes, most of that is being folded into NetBeans

[10:47] Rikart Freenote: Yes, GUI internationalization and locallization.

[10:47] You: Muslima, go ahead

[10:47] Muslima Questi: Im impressed with the open source idealogy,
however, I am not sure how I can benefit from that with regards to Java
(im still a java newbie), do you have any suggestions?

[10:47] Seiichi Wisent: thank you

[10:48] Jargon Jarman: You can benefit in a number of ways. First you
can look into the code. Maybe as a newbie that won;t help too much ...

[10:48] Jargon Jarman: but you might start to get some insights into how
things work under the covers. Alsobeing involved int he open source
community ...

[10:48] Jargon Jarman: will put you in touch with a whole universe of
people who can help you -- answer questions, help solve problems , etc.

[10:49] You: Next question?

[10:49] Muslima Questi: thanks

[10:49] Seiichi Wisent: Muslima: if you want to get to know how some
things can be written, just see the code of JDJ itself or any other
open-sourced app

[10:49] You: OKay, I'm going to open up to the panel...do you have a
question for the audience?

[10:50] Seiichi Wisent: there is a very good site for that: jdocs.com

[10:50] Jargon Jarman: Our developer sites are startign to do a lot more
in the area of videos and audio podcasts ...

[10:50] Jargon Jarman: Are there parituclar topics or guests that you
would like to see us cover in those sessions?

[10:51] Vesuro Destiny: I think the Java Desktop would be something a
lot of people would want to know more about

[10:51] You: anyone else?

[10:51] Jargon Jarman: Vesuro -- hanks. We'll definitely look into that.

[10:51] You: I know ya'll aren't shy

[10:51] pnc Blessed: I think glassFish and enterprise programming

[10:51] Rissa Maidstone: Will you have a transcript of this event for us?

[10:51] You: Yes Rissa:)

[10:51] Siddhartha Fonda: Jini and case studies of it, which may be
already out there, i haven't loked in a while

[10:51] Rissa Maidstone: Thank you :)

[10:51] Dominique Kuhn: java application development for desktop... like
frameworks

[10:52] Jargon Jarman: Blessed -- actually we've had a number of
GlassFish-related videos. See the dEEP dIVE VIDEOS ON THE JAVA.SUN.COM
VIDOES PAGE.

[10:52] JaniceHeiss SunMicrosystems: Thanks for all these wonderful
ideas. It's so good to have this 2-way converation, folks.

[10:52] pnc Blessed: thank you!

[10:52] You: Great feedback

[10:52] You: thanks gusy!

[10:52] You: Laureen..you had a question

[10:52] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: As developers, do you prefer
"official" documentation, or are you comfortable with
community-generated documentation (CGD)? Does CGD carry value for you?

[10:53] Siddhartha Fonda: i prefer official

[10:53] Whoops Babii: only whe it's accurate/

[10:53] Vesuro Destiny: I prefer community generated documentation,
because it tends to keep up very quickly, and be practical.

[10:53] Siddhartha Fonda: but nobody's perfect

[10:53] pnc Blessed: I prefer community real people using stuff for real
applications

[10:53] Leyla Masala: i prefer cgd

[10:53] Leyla Masala: usually it's more practical

[10:53] Leyla Masala agrees with vesuro

[10:54] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: OK, so if you're into community
docs... are you comfy with technical info in blogs/wikis? Or is it
Formal Articles or nothing?

[10:54] Whoops Babii: only if they are easy to find...

[10:54] Vesuro Destiny: I'm comfortable with blogs/wikis, I learned most
of what I know from forums

[10:54] Leyla Masala: both, wherever its easiest to understand

[10:54] Rissa Maidstone: I think the wikis have been tremendously
helpful, and also provide an excellent platform for
discussion/collaboration.

[10:54] pnc Blessed: well I think there needs to be both - Formal
articles to make sure everything is COVERED PLUS the coummunity stuff

[10:54] Vesuro Destiny agrees with pnc

[10:55] Rissa Maidstone: I think pnc has a good point.

[10:55] Leyla Masala agrees as well

[10:55] Siddhartha Fonda: right -- obviously the issue with cgd is
maintenance and clarity

[10:55] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: And finally... we are ALWAYS
looking for ways to encourage conversation, especially on our blogs. How
can we do that better? Right now, we are super comment-poor, and we're
needing to change that. Suggestions?

[10:55] JaniceHeiss SunMicrosystems: Getting feedback from readers is
fun. Our audience of Java developers has no tolerance for anything that
smells like marketing hype; they let us know it if they think we're
trying to sell them something.

[10:55] Siddhartha Fonda: bait us with more freebies

[10:55] Fiona May: LOL

[10:55] Dominique Kuhn: LOL

[10:55] You: lol

[10:55] Vesuro Destiny: lol

[10:55] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: LOL Siddhartha!

[10:55] Siddhartha Fonda: well... it had to be said...

[10:55] Siddhartha Fonda: but anyway

[10:56] Siddhartha Fonda: seriously

[10:56] Siddhartha Fonda: lemme think

[10:56] JaniceHeiss SunMicrosystems: How about a free lunch in SL? Or is
there no free lunch here?

[10:56] LaureenHudson SunMicrosystems: Yeah, Siddhartha, we know
developers will do anything for a t-shirt. =)

[10:56] You: when you do comment....and no freebies are involved...why
do you comment?

[10:56] Vesuro Destiny: Is anything free in SL? :)

[10:56] Dominique Kuhn: ROFL

[10:56] Siddhartha Fonda: that would be sufficient

[10:56] Leyla Masala: something similar to the PHP documentation seems
to rack up comments

[10:56] Jargon Jarman: "Freebiesw"!? All of our technolopgies, tools,
etc. are open source and free -- how's that for a freebiew?

we get all this stuff for free - so we need to give something back

[10:58] Siddhartha Fonda: well i think with time constraints there would
need to be some incentive to commenting, such as taking part in a
discussion thread that the blog post starts, as opposed to just
commenting on someone elses article or something, i guess... i'll need
to lookat the blogs more to see

[10:58] You: I want to thank the panel we have today.

[10:58] You: And I watn to thank all of you for your great questions

[10:58] You: Please be sure to take advantage of the SMI Press offer

[10:58] Rissa Maidstone: For the most part, I think participation occurs
because people have great interest and something to offer/give back to
you, and vice versa. This was a great panel :)
