Thursday June 22, 2006 Peek Over the Shoulder of a NB6 Developer
We just got a quick look at the top secret stuff Jan Lahoda is doing for NetBeans 6.0... Oooh... You might not remember the thread, but Roumen collected lots of feature requests in his blog, and Jan is the one working on them. Since Jan is mentioning some new features in his blog himself, he probably won't mind if I mention some too, right? =-D
As you can see in his screenshots, he is, among other things, improving the syntax highlighting. That is, semantically enhancing the syntax hightlighting! For instance, he can color unused indentifiers and imports differently than used ones... (Or static ones...) He's also experimenting with new useful things to put in the codecompletion window (ctrl-space), such as listing local variables that fit to the type of the argument you are about to type in... I don't even remember all the ideas he came up with, I don't even know why we still have to type anything at all with the progress he's making, ;-) but I was especially impressed that if you changed an identifier in one spot, the name change is automatically applied to all its occurences... That's like live refactoring. :-o Cool.
You cannot download and try any of these Editor features yet (not even in the daily builds), but you can keep up-to-date by reading Jan's blog and can give him feedback!
