Wednesday November 01, 2006 Yes, You Typed in the Right URL
Maybe it is the champagne talking, but I think the new NetBeans web site is just great! It's not the champagne, it's my boss, that's typing this right now. One of the advantages of living a continent away from your boss is that it doesn't happen very often. She is in town and insisting that I blog about the new look and feel of http://www.netbeans.org. Is she right? Is it *that* wonderful? Only time will tell. -VW
Uh. Huh? Heeelp! Somebody typed stuff in my open Blog window. :-) Oh well, I wrap it in a blockquote and just leave it there, who am I to throw away blog content? Especially now that I haven't blogged for two weeks. :-(
So (to celebrate the new netbeans version) I also went and installed Firefox 2.0, and off we go: If you have feedback about the redesign please leave a comment! We have already set up mirrors and are already working on the first bug reports (like when you download netbeans for an OS other than the one you are on, the download page sometimes offers you add-on packs for the OS you are on instead of the one you selected).
Part of the second redesign phase was to make add-on packs easier to download. Isn't a pack the same thing as a plugin? No, a plugin brings one piece of functionality, while an add-on pack brings a whole set of plugins in one step -- every plugin you need for C and C++ development, or all plugins needed for SOA (service oriented architecture) development, or everything you need for writing mobile applications, etc. This is why you find packs in the "products" section, because these IDE upgrades contain as much as a whole new product. The goal is to eventually integrate the packs (like the Profiler etc) into the IDE for 6.0.
The third redesign phase will concentrate on improving the community section even more, and especially improving plugin download and contribution -- I will tell you more as soon as we get the "go."
And what else did I miss in the last two weeks? James, who is currently sitting at home nursing a Prague-style sprained ancle will be writing more about the new Creator-like features that you get with th last one of our new packs, the Visual Web pack: For you guys who asked about it last month, I recommend James' first mini-tutorial that walks you through the basics of setting up a Visual Web project. For the Enterprise pack (SOA etc) look at Sherry's cool 99 second Enterprise Pack Demos (and some more)!
And yes I know I still haven't posted my review of the netbeans day in Munich. :-(( *desperately looking around for something to distract attention* ... Oh my, look what happened to James Gosling!
