IDE Phone Home

... takes on a whole new meaning!

What if you could install NetBeans IDE on... your mobile phone? Yup, finally those CDC mobile applications are put to good use.

A mobile IDE saves you lots of time and especially energy (batteries). You no longer have to boot your laptop or find a seat on the train. Where-ever you stand and have an idea, just whip out your phone. Jot down a piece of code into your mobile IDE (did I mention there will be code completion?), compile and run it. :-) Or say you're late for work: Coding a prototype for your boss will be as fast as sending an SMS... Spiffy. When you arrive at work, use bluetooth to send it to your workstation and integrate it into your project... Cool, ey? Doesn't run on my "old" phone though (CLDC only...) But as you see we'll get NetBeans Mobile bundled with the iPhone, so stay tuned!

Very very cool. Note that I predicted this on Thursday May 19, 2005 at the NetBeans IDE 4.1 Release Party.

And i thought that Steve Jobs said that there will be no Java for the iPhone. It's just like Geertjan said: very very cool.

Oh, pleasepleaseplease don't let this be an April Fool's joke...

I have NetBeans 5.x running on my real Java SavaJe phone since last JavaOne when I bought it... Very cool. Just need to install the 2Gb memory card. Works like a charm. The onlyu issue is connecting the mouse to the USB port: the mouse is bigger than my phone...

Look at the fonts. This is stupid to run an IDE on your phone.

@71.141.239.108 You don't need a mouse, use the touch screen update, it lets you left-click with your index finger and right-click with your middle-finger! For the whole 9-yard experience, you should also get one of those really small handy bluetooth keyboards!

And last but not least, YES, it was an April fools joke. But a very visionary one, as Geertjan's blog entry proves. ;-) It may already become reality next year, so I had to take a chance and post it this year. It's cool how I could just move windows around inside the IDE to take the resized screenshot, that made it a bit more credible, I hope.
