This might seem like old news, but I want to post a couple things I found to be really cool at last week's Web 2.0 conference...

Few take-aways...

  • Marketing has to be ok with having much less control in this web 2.0 environment.... it's in handing control over to our customers that we build credibility in our efforts.  (the sense of control is an illusion anyway)
  • Dell had an interesting experience in adopting a blogosphere... Initially, when they created a blogging infrastructure, they opened it up to comments and found a 48% rate of negative tonality. You might think this is bad press, but in reality it allowed them to reach out to their customers, address the problems being called out and make change based directly on consumer feedback. As a result, their negative tonality rate went from 48% to 27%.
  • Want to engage in viral marketing?  Share your information with 3 new people every day.

Presentations:

  • Hitwise did a terrific presentation on stats around Web 2.0 type marketing.
    • Wikipedia is the highest used online reference tool worldwide - 28%
    • Wikipedia use: 1% creators, 9% participators/content providers, 90% consumers/viewers
    • Wikipedia: Highest percentage of viewers: Age 18-34; Highest percentage of editors: Age 35-55, these people are the early adopters, older, highly influential
    • YouTube: Highest percentage of viewers: Age 25-54; Highest percentage of editors: Age 18-24 and Age 55+
    • Wikipedia: Use by gender: Male: 52%, Female: 48%; Partipators/Content providers: Male: 60%, Female: 40%
    • YouTube: Use by gener: Male: 51%, Female: 49%; Participators/Content providers: Male: 76%, Female: 24%
  • Ning - create your own social network for anything!  Check it out!
  • Technorati's Dave Sifry presented
    • Over 1 new blog is created every second
    • There are 1.5 Million posts a day across the globe, 58,000 posts an hour, 21% (72 million) are active bloggers (meaning one blog per 90 days)
    • Top 50 blog sites: NYTimes.com, CNN.com, News.Yahoo, MSNBC.MSN.com, BBC
    • Posts by language: 37% Japanese, 33% English, 7% Chinese, 1% Farci
  • Eric Schmidt of Google did an interesting interview with John Battelle covering things like the recent DoubleClick acquisition, the recent announcement of Google's new complete office suite...
  • Google Earth... you MUST see it.
  • 1-800-555-TELL - Amazing service... just use your cell phone, dial up the 800 number and you can literally find any business, restaurant, anything all by voice activation.  Unfortunately they were recently acquired by Microsoft, but it's definitely a cool service.
  • Jim Baty of Sun did a terrific presentation on Sun and our contributions around Architecture for Humanity.  But the coolest part was the parallels made between design architects and technology architects - and how together we're making a difference in the world.
