In a thread spanning the most exellent JavaLobby and TheServerSide some interesting points were raised in the Free vs. Paid (wrt software license fee).

I'd like to add one more important point to my original post. Java EE has given us an incredible advantage - there is CHOICE. You can choose which AppServer to develop on; you can choose which AppServer to deploy on you can even switch mid way through your project (though I wouldn't recommend it) - other server-side platforms do not have that luxury - the only choice you have is "like-it" or "suck-it-up". That said, people have to make the most of that advantage - choose wisely - use your head and not your heart - we're talking about Application Servers not high-street fashion.

As a footnote - I tried to post this to the TheServerSide thread but TSS seems to be semi-hosed - I can't post comments - Joseph - if you want to switch out your home-grown server-side Java platform for a rock solid Java EE App. Server let me know - I'd be happy to help ;)

Also - I prefer "Rich" or "Sharps" over "Rick" and I normally describe myself as a "recovering engineer" - I haven't done any real design or coding for a long time (more's the pity) - no offence taken in either case.

Well, like that thread suggests, feel free to email me comments and I'll work on getting them online to the best of my ability. As far as a "home-grown server-side Java platform," what do you think TSS runs? (Hint: I know what it runs, and it's not home-grown by any means.)
