Inflation Woes

Here's a challenge for you engineers and budding MacGyvers out there.

You are confronted by a wheelbarrow with a totally flat, but otherwise intact, tire. Further, the tire is the type with no inner tube.

You try unsuccessfully to reinflate the tire with a hand pump, but it is obvious that the space between the rim and the tire is not allowing air to be retained in the tire. You then try compressed air at the local service station on the theory that a much faster inflow of air will possibly overcome the gap issue. No dice. Still flat.

So, how to reinflate the tire? I googled a solution and photographed my implementation. If you give up, take a look. Once I did what is depicted, the tire inflated at the service station with no problem whatsoever.
