First steps after successful installation

As promised I am back - I am writing this entry from fresh installation of Solaris on my laptop. Installation went quite easily all basic things like graphics card, network card is running without problems. I had just a minor problem when creating my local user account as I initially set up home directory as /home/xxxxxxx but then I realized that the right approach is to set the home directory as /export/home/xxxxxxx.

I also configured Mozilla Firefox browser and Thunderbird without any problems (very comparable to Windows). I see my email, browser is working fine, etc.

The next step I am going to do is install pkg_get package in order to be able easily install some other applications or packages. I also have one FAT32 partition that can be seen from Solaris so I have to set it up as well. This is what should be quite easy but more challenges are in front of me - for example seting, wup a dual view, configure usb ADSL modem, and some other component (wifi, ...)

So far so good - I hope that the next steps will be smooth as well :-)

Introduction

Do you think that managers at Sun are using Solaris as the primary operating system on their laptops ? I don't think that it is so usual.

I am also Sun manager and currently using mainly Windows on my laptop, however I had some period (about 1 year ago) when I tried to use Solaris for my daily work. I had dual boot system (Windows and Solaris) and it worked well at that time. Unfortunately I removed Sun partition by accident and then I didn't find a time to come back and install & configure Solaris again.

Recently I got a new laptop Toshiba Tecra M5 and I decided to have again dual boot (Windows and Solaris). I would like to share my experiences with using Solaris on Laptop and potentially convince some other users to try it as well. I would categorize myself as an experienced user of UNIX like systems (not a system administrator) so I hope that I should be able to install, configure and use Solaris for my daily operations.

So I am taking the latest build of Solaris Nevada (B49 - DVD image), inserting it into my DVD drive installing it right now. More information will follow later ...
