Hi Solaris Campus avatars!

Congratulations to the 14 winners of the scavenger hunt! They will all receive a book of their choice as a prize for completing the challenge. Although the prizes have been claimed, you can still play the game and have fun finding clues that lead to other clues around the Sun Islands in Second Life.

Please feel free to suggest other activities you would like to see around our Solaris Campus in Second Life.

See you in SL...

The Author Chat today with Darryl Gove was great! What made it great? The people and expertise! We had about 10-12 folks attend the session but the questions/answers/discussion after Darryl's presentation really made it a great event.

I see these author chats as great opportunities to participate and share knowledge - I saw that today and it was great! We had some Second Life voice issues but that was ok - we powered through them, relied on text chat when voice went down and then picked up voice when it came back.

All in all, I think it was a good event - thanks to Darryl for participating and sharing! If you missed the event, here are the slides and transcript from Darryl's blog.

Fantastic - our first winner!

We haven't even launched the Solaris Campus area in Second Life and we already have one winner for the scavenger hunt (there will be more prizes): Hugo Wilkinson (SL name: Hugos Luminos), a Solaris enthusiast from the UK. We are giving him a free Sun Microsystems Press book of his choice (a real life book).

We hope Hugo and others will stick around the Solaris Campus as we begin to build this community of Solaris users which will allow us all to learn from one another and participate in learning Solaris.

Who doesn't like a little mystery, a little puzzle to put together? What if you could have fun with your peers (or individually for that matter) as you find out what's new in the Solaris 10 10/08 Update as you participate in a little adventure around the Sun islands in Second Life?

  1. You find a server at the welcome area of the Solaris Campus in Second Life.
  2. That mysterious object gives you a clue to where another similar object is hidden, it is some term related to the new Solaris update.
  3. You will get intrigued and start hunting around the Sun buildings in Second Life looking for objects that will lead to other objects with more clues in order to be opened, each giving you a piece of the puzzle surrounding the new update.
  4. You will think you are on the right track only to find out some clues lie in a shipwreck, well you dive in to find the last piece... and suddenly, all pieces come together... you know what Soalris 10 10/08 is all about.

Maybe you don't like doing quests alone, they can be dangerous or too challenging, maybe you just like to work collaboratively with others you just met at the Solaris Campus.

Join our scavenger hunt on October 10, 2008 right after the instructor-led session with Sun-certified instructors and try to solve all pieces of this puzzle for real life prizes (if you dare to complete the challenge).

Have fun learning!

Saturday Sep 27, 2008

Come have fun as you learn what's new in Solaris 10 10/08 Update.

What comes to your mind when you think of a "campus"? Brick walls from centuries past? Glass and steel buildings that try to mimic corporate environments? Well, that is not what the Solaris Campus team envisioned for this space in Second Life, the widely acclaimed Multi-User Virtual Environment (MUVE).

The informal learning space will launch on October 10, 2008 in Sun's public SIM so everyone has a chance to come meet other Solaris enthusiasts, exchange experiences, and learn more about Solaris by participating in scavenger hunts, chats with Solaris experts, and others in an informal social environment. What better place to have a "campus" than a relaxing beach? Come be a part of the Solaris Campus experience in Second Life, you are the experience!
