Java to be ported to the iPhone... but.....

Monday Mar 10, 2008

Sun has been really successful in porting Java to more than 60 billion devices, mobiles outnumbering PCs of course. And also this achievement has really helped Java developers around the world to love this programming platform.

Following its promise of "Code once, run everywhere" Sun has decided to extend this platform to the iPhone.

Considering the fact that iPhone has been arguably the fastest selling multi-purpose cellphone, and also one of the most innovative one, this step taken by Sun will be beneficial for not only to the two companies (Sun and Apple), but also to the industry.

But, a recent blog entry that I have read (referred by Rungta) has left me a little concerned. This blogpost is titled Code Signing and You.

<<snip>>
Let me repeat that: if Apple doesn’t sign your iPhone app, it does not run.

Certainly, this is not good for the developers. I hope the Java Applications would not have such restrictions by Apple.
