Project Blackbox

Tuesday Dec 18, 2007

A week or two ago I had seen the Keynote by Mr Jonathan Schwartz at Oracle Open World. Out of all the things that he had shared with the guests (including me.. :)), there was one thing that had really hit me. That was Project Blackbox. As soon as I heard about the concept, technology and innovation I sort of LOVED it. But it wasn't until today, that I really had a close look at what the project really consist of.

Four points that are being highlighted are:
Rapid, Easy Deployment: "Build once, deploy anywhere"
Very High-density Computing: Capacity for over 700 CPUs, 2000 cores, or 8000 compute threads!
Versatility and Flexibility: "What you want, where you want it, when you want it".
Breakthrough Economics and Eco Responsibility: scalability, use of standard components, cooling innovation, low cost to build, efficiency, and Sun's recycling initiatives.

Can you believe it. This container contains an entire DataCenter. Just plug-in 3 things. Water, power and network.

There was also one more thing that was highlighted by Jonathan Schwartz. The rate at which the cost of power is increasing, we are going to spend more money powering a server than buying it. Analogous to spending more money fueling a car than buying it. Just give it a thought....
