I read "Read Write Web" and enjoy the in depth articles, but one caught my eye recently is about Community managers and do startups require them in their organisations. it is a structured and in depth article written by Marshall Kirkpatrick.

So what is a community manager ?

Ive never come across this term before, but putting it into context, extracted from the article.

"A community manager can do many things (see below) but the most
succinct definition of the role that we can offer is this. A community
manager is someone who communicates with a company's users/customers,
development team and executives and other stake holders in order to
clarify and amplify the work of all parties. They probably provide
customer service, highlight best use-cases of a product, make first
contact in some potential business partnerships and increase the public
visibility of the company they work for"

So why did this article spark an interest for me then ? I see myself as being a community manager for Startup Essentials, helping to drive and support the Startup community in the UK and change peoples perceptions of Sun from being an Enterprise vendor that they are unable to afford or deal with, to a person who they can interact with and understand that cost is not a barrier, its all a perception.

So if you are a startup, go read the article its an interesting debate on the whys and hows of is this a required position.
