SmallBizPod is a podcast, blog, news and community site for small businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs. This is how it all happened.

Back in March 2005, Alex Bellinger became one of only a handful of people in the UK to start podcasting.

Looking around for a subject he realised there were no British-based podcasts on business. Since he had just set up his own business and had spent many years focusing on the small business sector, a podcast on entrepreneurship seemed like a good way to go.

SmallBizPod was born. The podcast, blog and website now attract tens of thousands of listeners and readers a month from all over the world.

Inspire, Inform, Entertain

From the start SmallBizPod has been there to inspire, to inform, and to be fun to listen to and read as well. I think thanks to some wonderful contributors and interviewees, it's achieved just that.

Over time, the site has grown to become one of the most visited sites for SMEs in the UK. It's also developed into a wonderful free audio resource to provide inspiration and advice from business people with real experience and real insight.

Take the time to listen to some inspiring interviews from some renowned people on subjects such as marketing, business advice, funding and many more, the beauty is that these are free and really insighful and great to hear that not just you in that Startup boat alone.

Visit http://www.smallbizpod.co.uk/  now and keep an update on the latest podcasts.

There's no room here to list in detail what Greg did that prompted literally thousands of BBC people to take to the streets in protest when he had to resign from the BBC, causing "men, women and even journalists to cry" and flooding his inbox with 6,000 emails from BBC people, most of which said how upset they were that he was going.

Greg was Director General of the BBC and is now the Chairman of the British Film Institute, Chairman of Brentford football club and also Chancellor of York University.  He also was one of the original architects of the Premier League in his days with LWT.  He has changed the face of British Television and British football whilst introducing a new no-nonsense direct style of inspirational leadership.

In his typical direct no-nonsense, impatient style Greg will take on the challenges from the audience and share his nuggets of insights.

These are the 5 areas he will span:

1.             The "Berlin Wall" moment for Democracy - His unique perspective on Public service reform and transformation of Democracy is that we are heading to a "Berlin Wall" moment that will change the course of politics
2.             Leadership in a crisis - is the outlook less bleak?  he has his own brand of leadership advice for entrepreneurs, corporate and public service leaders as they prepare to come out of the current crisis.
3.             Learning from shambles - the ITV mess provides a number of fabulous lessons for the choice of Board, the relationship between CEO and Chairman
4.             GAME changing innovations: Greg created BBC Freeview that changed British television and 20 years ago created the Premier League which has transformed the face of British football.
5.             What next for the British Film Industry -  how can new technologies like the internet be monetised to the advantage of the film industry and not just the pirates.

It is an unusual opportunity as Greg does not do sessions like these very often.  He does get called to do his set speeches but speaking directly from what he is passionate about and responding interactively to the challenging and confronting questions in public will be the juicy part of this breakfast. So definitely, keep your questions ready.

There are only a few spots still available as we like to maintain the intimate interactive style of these breakfasts.

We look forward to seeing you there.

So if you want to know more about the Cloud ask the Savvy Grannies, this is brought to you by Ioko and Sun to help understand Cloud Computing.

London, UK—8th October—Kohive, the online collaborative desktop that facilitates communication and collaboration between groups, today announces the launch of its range of premium services.

Aside from a large number of free applications that are part of the standard service, the premium service includes a task management app, increased file storage, and both an upcoming iPhone and desktop app which keeps users’ files, calendars and addresses in sync with their web interface.

After joining Kohive, the user is greeted with what looks like a computer desktop. There’s a dock of applications on the left and a tab panel at the bottom. Each of these tabs or “hives”, provides a completely separate space from which to invite people, share content and communicate with them live.

Kohive’s desktop interface allows for an unlimited number of uses since any number of web applications can be created and embedded into user generated hives. It’s a ‘collaboration platform’ where the user is in control.

Kohive’s founder Edward Sanchez gives a few examples:

“A freelancer could create hives to share and communicate with his team and clients. He’d create another hive to talk to his family, share photos and recipes. And another to share and talk to his closest friends. It’s that range of uses that makes the platform so effective.”

While other sites carry the legacy of page-driven navigation (each link takes the user to a new page) Kohive uses AJAX for seamless data retrieval and Ext JS, a new front-end JavaScript library that provides a desktop window driven interface. This means information loads more quickly and navigation is smoother as only the content (and not the page) gets transferred.

Edward Sanchez says:

“Design and usability is at the core of Kohive. The site mimics familiar user interfaces as well as using the latest technologies and best practices for user navigation. By doing so, we make sure that users can always get from A to B with a minimum amount of effort.

Kohive is to current collaboration sites what the iPhone was to previous generation phones. It offers a superior user experience and an expandable service where custom applications can be installed. What you see now is really only the start - we’re working on lots of great apps and features that will be coming over the next few months - the Kohive roadmap is exciting for both users and developers”

To celebrate the launch of the premium suite of services, Kohive are giving users the opportunity to win some shiny prizes:

  • Tweet the Kohive URL for a chance to win an iPod Touch
  • Free account signups are entered in a competition to win a MacBook
  • Paid account signups are entered in a competition to win a custom coloured MacBook Pro

A video demoing the service can be seen here: http://www.vimeo.com/6940993

Mint CEO Aaron Patzer presented a step-by-step narrative on how he built his company in three years to $170 million target for personal finance giant Intuit.

In a moment of nonchalance, Patzer, who spoke at the Juice Pitcher event, hosted by TheFunded.com and Vator.tv, admitted to Adeo Ressi, the founding member of The Funded, that he sold Mint for cash to Intuit, so it didn't matter to him what happened to Intuit's shares.

Congratulations Micello team for your launch at DEMOfall 09 last week!

At DEMOfall 09 in San Diego, CA, Sun Startup Essentials member Micello showcased how to navigate "inside" places with an iPhone. Watch the video.

Micello has built a database of maps of places people go to shopping malls, college campuses, convention centers etc, and allows users to access, navigate and explore those places using their mobile phones. Unlike, its competitors, Micello keeps its own database of place of interest rather than relying on satellite-based map systems. In addition, by integrating social networking services into the application, Micello brings together all the activity happening inside a building where people gather.

The Micello application is free for end users and can be downloaded from Apple’s AppStore. The application will be available on Blackberry OS, Android, WebOS in the coming months. Micello’s Facebook application is also coming soon.

Micello received glowing reports from the press. Below is only a sample.
