Help Us Help You

On April 11, the web heads of Sun are having a roundtable meeting to discuss various topics on what we should be developing and how we should be helping our partners and customers provide content and services on the net.

If you have input on what we should consider, here is your opportunity to talk to us.

We've already rolled out the TryAndBuy program, StartupEssentials, Web Developer Tools and Samples, and various Web Infrastructure Solutions.

We welcome and will discuss any and all comments posted here.  [Added: We'll take your input and apply it to our strategies for new and existing web infrastructure solutions.]  If you want a response on how your idea was received, let me know.

[Added:]  I jacked these suggestions from John Clingan and his entry on this topic.

  • What barriers exist for you to develop and/or deploy using Sun products and technologies?
  • Are there technologies/frameworks you wish Sun were supporting that we do not support today?
  • Are we putting too much emphasis on a particular product and/or technology?
  • If only Sun could do [insert action here], it would make my life sssooo much better!

Thanks In Advance

Comments:

Well, before you innovate further with alternate or additional programs ... how about making the reach of the existing ones global ...

The 'Try and Buy' program is in full swing in the Americas, but variously restricted or hampered in most others geo's.

The 'StartupEssentials' program, which is the one I'm most interested in personally is a complete non-starter outside of the States, inspite of numerous enquiries and promises.

You'd make a lot of developers very happy by working on parity of offerings across the globe *now*, before the roll-out of the next (great I'm sure!) development.

Thanks for the first input, Craig. You are right. TryAndBuy and StartupEssentials are good programs but need some expansion. I believe TryAndBuy is available in at least 12 countries so far. For StartupEssentials, we recently added additional storage products and an AskSun support channel. We are currently working on customs, shipping, and web sales protocols for some GEOs. If you have specific countries that you want us to prioritize, please let me know.

Correction - According to the fine print, TryAndBuy is available in 20 countries in addition to the US.

Steve, thanks for the quick reply.

Personally, bringing up the StartupEssentials programme in Europe (but particularly the UK!), would be an ideal first step ;-)

* What barriers exist for you to develop and/or deploy using Sun products and technologies? 1. Having to buy Sun equipment through resellers in South Africa, rather than the web. Hardly ever see any Sun advertising here. * Are there technologies/frameworks you wish Sun were supporting that we do not support today? 1. Better support for AJAX with JSF. Visual web pack for netbeans needs to be improved to match or surpass features in ASP.net + Atlas. (Invest more in netbeans visual web pack). * If only Sun could do [insert action here], it would make my life sssooo much better! 1. Provide support for creating reports in visual web pack for netbeans, and also for Swing apps. Lack of reporting tools is a major problem. This is critical for visual web pack to be a viable option.
