The Tip of the Iceburg (in Virtualization)

InfoWorld is running an interesting article about how hardware vendors and virtualization software companies are starting to work together more.  For me, one of the most interesting parts is the following quote:

The server virtualization software market is expected to grow to as much as $7 billion in 2011 from $800 million in 2006. Current penetration of virtualization on installed x86 servers is estimated at just 6% today.

It sure seems like the next three years will be a wild ride for companies (like Sun) in the virtualization fray.  I think it's safe to say that the data center of 2011 (only three or four years from now) will be really transformed by new virtualization and data center automation techniques.  That, combined with advances in hardware, will allow companies to radically change how they take advantage of computing to run their businesses.  On a related note, we starting a number of customer installs of xVM Ops Center in December (actually, the team is working on one this week).  I'll post some notes about those in the coming weeks.  Really cool stuff.
