Does the application needs to be written in Java?

Posted by Felipe Cerda on September 02, 2008 at 01:40 PM PDT #

Hi Felipe,

Please see the details at the contest page, specifically the "How to Enter" section.

The application can be developed using Java, PHP, Python, or Ruby.

I encourage you and other participants to carefully read through the material at
http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/reviews/studentzone/contest.jsp

Good luck.

Hello Felipe and other students,

This is also mentioned in the contest page, rules documents etc. but I think I should reiterate --

ALL the submission related materials (documentation, comments, reviews etc.) need to in ENGLISH only.

Thanks.

Sun contests just keep me frustrated because the eligibility rules, they just don't have "Tunisia" in their map

So, you're back again! Things have changed a lot in past 2 months, and its good to have it again...But, I might not participate...

Anyways, thanks for featuring me on the Student Reviews website :-)

@ KhaledE,

We have alternate ways of highlighting students' work for countries where we can not run the contest for legal reasons.
We feature student reviews at http://www.sun.com/student_reviews -- check out the current ones, they are from a variety of countries. If you are interested to have your work promoted, feel free to contact us using the "Contact Student Reviews" option in the URL above.

Hi,

In first glance, this competition looks really difficult:

1. I need to learn Java EE or any other enterprise app language (Ruby etc)
2. Learn how to implement it on Glassfish
3. Think of a very nice intuitive project which hasn't been thought of before
4. Get it accepted on java.net
5. Write it's review? From whose point of view - developer? End user?

All this in a time span of a month! This competition looks unfairly tedious as compared to the last one. Can you please help us out a bit? :)

For those who are starting on Glassfish, it's very easy to install and deploy your first application. I wrote a short tutorial about how to do that on Linux:

Hi,

The contest seems to be interesting. Something better than the last review contest. There are a few queries:

1. The application can be developed in Java, PHP, Python, or Ruby, but on java.net only Java related projects can be hosted. How to go about for applications written in languages apart from Java?

2. Can the web application being developed be simple? Can we have some idea on the type of Web Application to be created?

3. How to get started with GlassFish and MySQL?

It's a good chance and I intend to attend.

@ Mohamed Sanaulla

1. java.net is accepting all student projects for this contest. You can use any of the 4 languages listed in the contest page, and it will be approved.

2. Yes, the web application can be simple. However, you have to use GlassFish and MySQL in your submitted project to be eligible.

You can pick any web application of your choice. See the judging criteria section to see on what the judges will be awarding more points towards.

3. There is a blog posted here about GlassFish installation. Also,

GlassFish Getting Started Guide is at:
https://glassfish.dev.java.net/downloads/quickstart/index.html

There is a comprehensive list of documents for students at:
https://spotlight.dev.java.net/start/

A MySQL Getting Started Guide is at
http://dev.mysql.com/tech-resources/articles/mysql_intro.html

Good luck.
