Accelerating Application Deployments using N1 SPS

Are you running a complex product development that's complex not only from a design or architecture perspective, but also brings along with it complex deployment requirements ? Then you should definitely take a look at this great product from Sun Microsystems. It's called N1 Service Provisioning System (N1SPS) and the latest version that's out there is Version 5.2.1. ( Look out for the next version in a few days... )

N1 SPS accelerates deployment of complex applications across heterogeneous environments. You can now intelligently automate your application deployment plans with SPS's object-oriented modeling approach, as a result improving serviceability and manageability of your applications. To do this, you'll have to model your application environment using the XML modeling support offered with N1 SPS. You can eliminate the need to rely on ad-hoc scripts and manual procedures, virtually eradicating installation errors and increasing application availability. You can reduce deployment slip-ups using the simulation, automation, roll-back, configuration and comparison features that come along with N1 SPS.

Here's a list of key features offered by N1 Service Provisioning System:

Provisioning : Installs the entire software stack - middleware, application and OS1 using a single tool.
Configuration Comparison
: Checks for differences between two application instances on the managed systems.
Deployment Simulation : Simulates the deployment process on target systems prior to actually implementing the changes to ensure successful delivery.
Version Control and Roll-back : Records all actions and changes made by administrators to enable reverting the application states if needed.
Role-based Access Control : Grants specific permission to users for performing application management tasks.
Pre-built Models : Reduces complexity and speeds up application deployment.
Software Developer Kit : Enables developers to build custom models for provisioning specific applications.
Java API : Allows N1SPS to be integrated into an existing application.

1 Operating Systems Provisioned - Solaris 9, 10 (SPARC, X86), RHAS 3.0, 4.0 (both 32/64 bit), SUSE ES 9, Win 2K, Win 2K AS, Win 2K3

Apart from the above, the greatest power of N1 SPS lies in its heterogeneous support where you can deploy to and manage the following types of servers:

Solaris 7, 8 (SPARC platform edition)
Solaris 9, 10 (SPARC and X86 platform edition)
Microsoft Windows Server 2000, Advanced Server 2000
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 - Web, Enterprise, Standard, Data Center Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 - Enterprise and Standard edition (64 bit)
Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1, 3.0 (32/64 bit); 4.0 (32/64 bit)
IBM AIX 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3
HP-UX 11 i
SuSE Linux Enterprise 8 and 9

I'll strongly encourage you to download N1 SPS and avoid spending those weekends at work deploying software production servers. Stay tuned for more on SPS on my blog..
