In latest OpenSolaris build (OpenSolaris build 124) and Solaris Nevada (snv_124), the newest xkeyboard-config has been integrated. Xkeyboard-config is the primary source of the XKB data (All Keyboard related data for Xorg server. Xkeyboard-config project which is a project of the freedesktop.org is actively maintained and used by numerous user communities.

Current xkeyboard-config version is v1.6 which has been delivered a couple of months ago; contains many more new keyboard layout symbols for several countries and regions of the world, more variants for existing and for new keyboard layouts, support for additional models of physical keyboards, updated geometries and keycodes, and such that are 100% compatible with other Linux distributions and also widely accepted by
various user communities in the world, several bugs fixed and new configuration components added...

A couple of months ago; Solaris Nevada and OpenSolaris started using HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer). Now, all Input Device Configuration is done through HAL rather than xorg.conf.

HAL, uses XML files for its configuration and store them in  /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ directory. The syntax of these files is very intuitive and if you have ever modified xorg.conf file, you will find it very simple to work with these files.

Before HAL was integrated, some people used to configure their Keyboard Layout and Keyboard Settings using xorg.conf but since HAL integration this configuration is not working any more...

The goal of this project is to enable a user to create and customize their own OpenSolaris locale without requiring a high level of technical knowledge. The output of localectr is an installable IPS package containing number of binaries and other supporting files with the locale data information. After the installation fully working locale is created on the OpenSolaris system.

For detailed usage of the tool and proposed new features have a look at this page.

What is PCT?

PCT means - Pre Consolidation Testing. We are using PCT for testing our patches and fixed packages before integration. We are able to find many bugs and fix them before official integration. It's also very good way for our engineers how to test their patches and packages.

Probably many of you heard about or visited these events and if not think about to go. This is a great event where thousands of people from all around the world meet to chat in person and to visit sessions where all new things around Java and now also around OpenSolaris and other community projects are presented. Conference is held in Moscone Center North. It's huge and great place for a big conference, located just in heart of San Francisco which allows you to go for lunch to such place like Yerba Buena Gardens.

After having a short pause caused by a team reduction, we re-started our team meetings again. The major difference is that we have changed a meeting format from every week 2 hours long team meetings to a SCRUM methodology approach.

Solaris G11n EMEA Team SPRINT backlog Solaris G11n EMEA Team

There are a lot of articles about SCRUM, so I'm not going to describe this methodology in detail again. Anyone interested in such methodology can find a lot of articles and books on Internet. I also put some of my learning resources at the end of this article.

What I'm going to write here is what I expect from this change and what is a practical impact to the team.

A pleasant side-effect of enabling the gdm System Menu in OpenSolaris, as described in yesterdays blog - KDE 4.1.4 shutdown and reboot are now enabled within the session as well.

Currently OpenSolaris doesn't allow system reboot nor shutdown directly from the login screen (gdm). This short article will show you how to enable the System Menu in gdm and make it look like the following image.

Have you thought about translation of OpenSolaris project? So you are at the right pages. And moreover: a translation process has never been easier than now.

Intro

There are a lot of ways how to translate any piece of code or online help for OpenSolaris. However I recommend to use CTI tool (Community Translation Interface) developed by G11n Engineering team in Prague. With this tool, the translation process is very easy and fast. In addition to that you can focus only to the content you are going to translate and you do not have to deal with different file formats, different message workspaces and different rules required for integration to a product.[Read More]

OpenSolaris 2009.06 is coming soon. Therefore we took the translated content for projects contributed by the community and integrated it to OpenSolaris. At the same time I was able to obtain some interesting data about translations I would like to share with you.

Data was obtained for contributions done via CTI tool - the tool that is preferred for translation of SW messages and Online help. Check the list of top contributors now!
