A raining day at Hua-Hin

Today, I am at Hua Hin, a small charming city in the southern part of Thailand. This city is a famous place for summer vacation. However, this trip is not my holiday, we hosts a FSI (Financial Services Industry) executive forum for our key customers here. We were very pleased seeing all CxO from all major banks joining the our sees ions in the afternoon because there were a heavy storm passing by the area on the early afternoon.
Yet, the event started on time and opened by Lawrence Scott. Follow by a round table from Sun & PWC discussed on IDM and its impact on banking industry. Our partner, Greenplum, did an interesting presentation on its BI product. After a short break, the event continued by a speaker from SAP and the day ended by the impressive presentation of the manager of Market for Alternative investment (MAI).
The Forum will continue tomorrow morning.

I've been tagged by SeChang!

Hey..I have been tagged by SeChang, our APAC SE leader on last Friday. It takes me few nights to contemplate about my top five things. Here, they are:

1. A New Video streaming Server My personal impression with Sun is the company always ahead of time in term of product advancement. My first project with Sun Video on Demand product dated in 1998. Internet just became a major wave during that time. Thailand has not had any nationwide ISP yet. we caught lots attention from cable operators, cinema, and Telco operators. However, the major obstructcal in  those days was there was no digital content widely available yet. No DVD or MP3. We had  the first customer that installed our system in a luxury Karaoke & restaurant, Baan Nang Thai,  in Sukhumvit road.

2. What a wonderful day! During my study in US during mid 90s, I visited many places from Boston to San Francisco, Chicago to Orlando. Still, my best memory was in New York City, for the most beautiful afternoon that I sat along Hudson river at South Street sea port. The light wind blew south made a wave with sparking light in Hudson. I was a wonderful, beautiful day.

3. I love Krabi Though, I am not a sea sportsman. Do not dive in deep sea water without life support. After my first visit to Krabi beaches at the southern path of Thailand when I was sixteen, I tried to learn many game in sea sports. Not good at them yet. Still, the picture of deep, clear water with a soft, white sand keeps calling me back to that area again and again. Hoping one day, I can go there and enjoy the activities all day long.

4. You do not get it, you have to earn it. That comment from my visiting professor told us during my study for a master degree. After graduated, I realized that his statement always valid outside the academic world. It applies to actually everything in life. Do not expect anything to come easily. SUCCESS..You have to EARN it.  

5.  OpenSource, OpenOffice & Pladao In 2000, Sun Thailand had an initiative to promote StarOffice to Thai Market. However, StarOffice and Openoffice were not ready for localization. Thus, we decided to take the pre-released version of OpenOffice and localized it to a Thai OpenOffice called Pladao. Within six months that I led the whole development program and finally launched it to Internet on our H.M King birthday Dec5th, Pladao became our success. There were thousands waiting in Grand Hyatt convention center to get the Pladao CD on the formal launched date.  More than 1 millions copies distributed all over country. Pladao 2.0 had a similar success in 2003.

Storage Day in Thailand

สองวันที่ผ่านมามีการให้ความรู้กับทิมงานและตัวแทนจำหน่ายของงซัน เกี่ยวกับผลิตภัณต์ Sun StorageTek การอบรมใช้เวลาสองวันเต็ม โดยวันแรกเป็นการให้ความรู้กับทีมงานขายเป็นหลักเน้นผลิตภัณท์ใหม่ที่นำออกตลาด เช่น  Crypto key management for Tape drive encription  ให้วันที่สองจะเน้นไปทางด้านเทคนิค ซึ่งในวันที่สองนี้มี การแสดงการทำงานของ software ที่อยู่บน StorageTek 9985 เช่น Virtual Partition manager, Tiered Storage Manager, Universal Volume Manager, Universial Replicator โดยทำการเชื่อมผ่านเครือข่ายความเร็ว 2Mbps ไปยังห้องแล็ปที่ California และแสดงการทำงานอย่าง interactive ทำให้ทุกคนที่ได้เห็นประทับใจกับความสามารถของ Sun StorageTek 9985 อย่างมากที่ช่วยให้การทำ Business Continuity, Virtualization  และ Data protection ได้ดีอย่างยิ่ง

Solaris Application Scaner tool

เมื่อวานนี้มีโอกาสได้คุยกับลูกค้าที่ใช้เครื่อง SunFire 25K, SunFire 15K กับ Solaris 8 ที่ใช้ชิป  UltraSparc IV อยู่ เนื่องจากความต้องการทางธุระกิจที่มีการขยายตัวอย่างรวดเร็ว ทำให้มีความต้องการที่จะซื้ออุปกรณ์เพิ่มเติมโดยต้องการที่จะใช้ชิป UltraSpac IV+ ที่ความเร็วสุงสุดในปัจจุบัน แต่เนื่องจากการจะได้ประโยชน์สูงสุดจากการลงทุนนั้น จำเป็นต้องเปลี่ยนไปใช้  Solaris 9 ที่สามารถจัดการทางด้าน memory และ security ได้ดีขึ้นจากเดิมมาก คำถามที่ได้รับก็คือว่า จะต้องทำการทดสอบแอปพิเคชั่นอย่างไรให้มั่นใจว่าสามารถทำงานบน Solaris 9 ได้อย่างไม่มีปัญหา

ในอดีตการตอบคำถามข้างต้นต้องใช้เวลาและทีมงานมาช่วยกัน แต่ด้วย Sun Application Scanner Tool ทำให้เราได้รายงานออกมาในเวลาเพียงชั่วโมงเศษ ซึ่ง Tool นี้ครอบคลุมการทดสอบ components ต่างๆ บน Solaris 8,9 และ 10

Mashup & Sun

In my interview with Thai newspaper last Friday on Sun initative, The big mashup, the reporter asked one key question what Sun gets in return from this.

My simple response is base on Sun beleives in community participation. This will accelerate the speed of internet growth. The more communication - data, the more opportunity for Sun to serve our customers with our technolgy. Also, a new group of customer will arise during this process.

 Though, the reporter seemed uncertain on our vision at first, in her articleMashup article, it is quite positive.

Virtualization == Consolidation

In most of my discussion with CIOs, Consolidation is always the hot topic that they interests. Though, each one may look from different persepectives: server consolidation, storage consolidation,  application consolidation, data consolidation or business consolidation (BCP). Yet, they have one  common goals in their mind... cost saving!
Don't you know that Sun has a full offering on consolidation and virtualization. Today, I met with Raj Dosaj Sun Sr. Director, Systems Practice and his team in a virtualization boot camp in Singapore. It was quite amazing that improvements in Solaris 10 and hardware technology makes Sun in postion to provide answers for CIOs: from Hardware partitioning, Software virtualization, Container.  Still, the most important part that make Sun in a unique position is the methodology (Applicaiton profiling)  and tool (such as STOCA).

แม้ว่าดูเหมือนจะเป็นรูปภาพที่ไม่ซับซ้อนแต่ส่วนที่น่าสนใจมากที่สุดกับเป็นวิธีการที่จะได้ข้อมูลที่มากพอและเหมาะสมเพื่อผ่านขบวนการที่เรียกว่า Applicaiton Profiling ซึ่งประกอบด้วย
  1. การจัดประเภทของแอปพิเคชั่น
  2. การจัดกลุ่มให้ตามประเภทขอ่งแอปพิเคชั่นในข้อแรก
  3. การเลือกเทคโนโลยี่ (HPC, Blade, CMT, SMP )ที่เหมาะสนเพื่อใช้ให้เหมาะกับกลุ่มนั้นๆ
จากนั้นก็จะนำข้อมูลไปผ่านโปรแกรม STOCA (Sun TOC Analysis) ซึ่งจะประมวลผลและเปรียบเทียบค่าใช้จ่ายในรูปแบบต่างให้อย่างรวดเร็ว แน่นนอนว่าต้องมีข้อมูลพื้นฐานเช่นค่าใช้จ่ายในการจัดซึ้อ ค่าเช่าพื้นที่ ค่าไฟ เงินเดือนพนักงานด้าน IT เป็นต้น ผลลัพธ์ที่ได้จะแสดงทั้งในรูปกราฟเปรียบเทีบบ และตาราง ซึ่งไม่เพียงง่ายต่อ CIO จะนำเสนอต่อผู้บริหารท่านอื่น แต่อาจะเป็นครั้งแรกที่  CIO สามารถแสดงว่าสามารถเปรียบเทียบให้เห็นอย่างชัดเจนว่าสามารถลดค่าใช้จ่ายได้อย่างไร จากการเลือกเทคโนโลยี่ (HPC, Blade, CMT, SMP )ให้เหมาะสนเพื่อใช้ให้เหมาะกับกลุ่มงาน หรือแม้จะแสดงว่าเมื่อไรไม่ควรจะทำการควบรวมระบบอีกด้วย
