So far I've made three very nice shiny coasters.

I know the Ultra 5 hardware is ok, as I was able to install Solaris 9 just fine. I was unable to use the copy of Nero I have. When I tried Nero, the whole PC would freeze as soon as I selected the options recommended on the Solaris 10 download/burn instructions page. Don't know what's going on there, but Nero has been flakey for me in the past.

I tried another program I have called CDBurnerXPPro. I followed their instructions to create the ISO images. But the disk one that resulted wouldn't boot. The first attempt returned this error after executing the "boot cdrom" command:

short disk read
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.

I did some searching around on supportforum.sun.com and google and found that perhaps I needed to specify that the option to complete the disk write and not leave the CD un-closed. So I created another one with that option and this is what "boot cdrom" had to say:

Can't read disk label.
Can't open disk label package.
Boot load failed.
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.

I usually don't give up this easily, but I hate wasting the blank media. I'll just find someone at work who has a pre-made set and use those.

But it's nice having "sunny" back. I wish to thank the anonymous donors who provided the necessary parts. You know who you are!

Comments:

I burn my cds with Solaris ;)

    $ cdrw -i solaris_1.iso

Actually I only burn the first one. The other's get used after the reboot in an upgrade so I lofi mount them and export them from my workstation (saving on cdrs that I will only use once or twice). In fact the only reason that I need the first cd is that my notebook has the broadcom ethernet in it and I need murayama's ethernet driver to make it work. This driver is not on the boot environment. Maybe one of these days I'll build up an "upgrade cd", that contains the normal boot environment along with enough t obe able to do an nfs based upgrade, which is certainly faster than doing it from cdrom with the dma turned off.

I have not had a problem doing these images onto either cd-rws or cdrs.

Of course since I picked up a stack of 100 TDK 700mb cdrs recently for AUS$29, I'm not so concerned about coasters anymore anyway :)

Alan,

none of my Sun's has a CDRW or DVDRW installed, but you are right, burning on a Sun (disable vold) or Linux system should work flawlessly.

Not sure where you are with this effort, but if you are still having problems burning ISOs on Windows, I've found a handy tool to burn them easily and I've not had any problems burning either DVDs or ISOs that are bootable on Sun Hardware. But of course, YMMV - I've not had any problems with Nero either...

The program is for Windows XP and is located at: http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm

This program associates with .ISO files and when you right-click on them, the option "Copy image to CD" works as expected.

I realized I should mention the application for the benefit of others...
