The bubble

I am so behind the curve on Web 2.0 (now 3.0), and I couldn't laugh when the bubble burst, but I smiled a lot while watching this: Here Comes Another Bubble.

Adobe announced this week that it's CEO, Bruce Chizen, is stepping down. The San Jose Mercury News did a wonderful tribute to Bruce on it's editorial page today. Wow.
In the spirit of full disclosure-- I do know Bruce personally. But this is still a very cool statement from the local press about Bruce's values and impact within the community. It also says a lot about qualities of leadership.
The docs.sun.com team announced enhancements to the search on the docs.sun.com site.
Today the docs.sun.com engineering team has migrated its search capabilities from the existing search mechanism to the .Sun search standard - Sun Search.
The benefit of this move is:
Consistency for our customers
Customers will now experience the same highly relevant results that are available on many other Sun web sites and applications, translating to an overall better user experience. To help provide a smooth transition to the new search functionality see the "New Search Methodology" on "What's new":
Sun Internal site --> http://docssust.sfbay/source/DSCHelp/p2.html
Sun External site --> http://docs.sun.com/source/DSCHelp/p2.html
This move represents another major step toward improvements planned for the docs.sun.com site.
Please direct any questions or feedback to dsc-engrg@sun.com.

The docs.sun.com team has made some recent changes that noticeably improve performance on the site. See Tech Dogg's Dox Tox: docs.sun.com: From Rots to Rocks! for the details. Kudos to the docs.sun.com team!
A colleague of mine, Layne Ethington, recently died, losing a very quick battle to brain cancer. Layne was a Solaris System Administration writer. I worked with him when I was program manager for Solaris and OpenSolaris documentation.
We held a memorial at Sun for him this past week. It was a beautiful tribute to him, filled with both tears and laughter, as folks shared their memories with each other. Layne touched the hearts of a lot of people in our department. I learned so much about him that I never knew, or ever took the time to ask.
I have to admit that I've been in kind of a funk since the memorial though. Yes, I'm in a funk because some one I knew and cared about is gone. I am in more of a funk though because of how little I knew about Layne, and how little I know about a lot of people I work with. I don't often take the time to go to lunch with friends and colleagues, as I eat at my desk. Family commitments usually push me toward home after work, instead of going out with the gang. My average work day filled with meetings and emails doesn't allow much time for even simple conversations with the people that I spend more waking hours with than my family.
Layne's death serves as a reminder to me, to smell the roses, to go out to lunch with friends more often, and to talk about the things that matter in the world.
My commute takes me by the site once known in Sun history as PAL01. The building, originally a Ford Aerospace building, overlooks the entrance to 101 north, my pathway to MPK17. ( Yes, I still commute to a Sun office everyday, by choice!) Sun moved out of PAL01 years ago and sold the property. The site will become the future home of the Palo Alto Jewish Community Center, some senior housing and additional community facilities. It's an enormous project that took years to take through the Palo Alto planning and approval process. The construction site has been busy for months, but PAL01 remained intact. Well, PAL01 is finally coming down. Just last week I noticed a large hole on one side and a pile of crumbling rubble, evidence that the wrecking ball had been there. It's another piece of the changing face of Silicon Valley.
docs.sun.com, Sun's documentation website, has a new look and feel. They've updated the style to make it consistent with other Sun websites. Also, the search engine has been modified. Take it for a ride!
I quietly marked a milestone this past week, 12 years at Sun. I celebrated by attending Java One for the first time.
There's a lot of new features in the Java CAPS 5.1.3 documentation.
More specifically, the eInsight Business Process Manager User’s Guide documents the following new features:
Thanks to Carol Thom for the low down!
Java CAPS 5.1.3 was released today. Fully searchable html and pdf product documentation will be available as part of the product download. In addition, pdf versions of the documentation are posted on docs.sun.com, Sun's documentation website. The full documentation set is found at:
The doc set was put together by the Sun IPG ("Information Products Group") in Monrovia, California: Carol Thom, Dario Padilla, Mark Moussa, Louis Kraft, Eric Erickson and Norm Stahlberg.
As the books say, we appreciate your feedback. Please send any feedback or comments to CAPS_docsfeedback@sun.com.
There's a new set of SOA Documentation that is available as part of the Netbeans 6.0 Preview Release at NetBeans 6.0 Preview, SOA Documentation. The doc set includes user guides and tutorials in the following categories:
This documentation release is another instance of successful global collaboration at Sun. The team included writers from the San Francisco Area, Monrovia (California), St. Petersberg and Bangalore. The final collaborative moments took place in Monrovia where the Monrovia team was joined for two weeks by Jagdish Kumar Vinjamuri from Bangalore. Jagdish worked with Kevin Hopke to install and test the samples for the various tutorials. Opportunities to work together like this help strengthen the team going forward.
Additional documentation for the runtime parts of SOA is found on the Open ESB website.
If you're at Java One over the next few days, you can pick up a CD with this release, including the docs.
For tips on using search more effectively on docs.sun.com, see a arecent entry in Sun Cluster Oasis called Tips and Tools to Search in Sun Cluster 3.2 Documentation. I think the tips will work for other product doc sets that are published to http://docs.sun.com, the Sun product documentation site.
Thanks Lisa!
'finished up a team meeting just before 9:00 pm tonight.
Time to assemble the tax forms, sign them, then write the checks to the Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board, and head out the door to the Palo Alto Post Office. Yes, that was the Palo Alto Post Office, not my local Mountain View Post Office. There's something about the physical act of mailing my tax forms, albeit, I usually don't wait until 9:25 pm the night they are due.
All day long I listened to radio reports about the number of tax filers using electronic filing this year, and the number of tax payers getting refunds. We didn't fit into either category this year.
The Sun Java System B2B Suite 2.0 docs were finally assigned to their own product node on docs.sun.com. You can now view the product documentation at Sun Java System B2B Suite 2.0.
As a documentation program manager, I have a vested interest in making sure that Sun Java System B2B Suite 2.0 users find the online documentation. I hope this new product node will help, although everyone tells me that our users find our documentation by using Google. Let me know how you found this doc set!
For more information on this new product suite, see http://www.sun.com/b2b. You can also join the Sun B2B Community on java.net.
One of the groups that I support as a program manager works on the NetBeans Enterprise Pack 5.5.1 project. Docs are live for beta at netbeans.org

You know I thought I ws behind the curve on Web 2....
