New Look and Feel to docs.sun.com

Tuesday May 22, 2007

docs.sun.com, Sun's documentation website, has a new look and feel. They've updated the style to make it consistent with other Sun websites. Also, the search engine has been modified. Take it for a ride!

Now, if just the search would work... It would start to be helpful

It still feels like it runs on a Ultra 1 over ADSL. Well, not as much runs, as crawls.

Why bother with cosmetic changes when the fundamental problem is that it is so painfully slow as to be nearly unusable. Not to mention that the search engine is crude and unexpressive. It really speaks poorly of Sun for one of the primary developer resources to be so bad. The only Sun site I've found to be worse is SunSolve.

Right, search has not changed yet, that change is targeted for June 26. We should see perf improvement by June 15, if not by then, it will be after July 15. So, hang in there, the cosmetic change is super-exciting because it is proof of some NEW work being done after long dormant phase.

Thanks for the update Michelle. I think I just read the same email that you did. I had thought that some of the search work was complete-- oh well! I am looking forward to change. I agree, while the initial changes may seem to be merely cosmetic, they are an indicator that change is finally afoot. 'just trying to reassure our docs.sun.com users that we are listening to the feedback.

Hi, docs.sun.com is currently nearly unusable, because it's so slow. I need about five minutes to navigate to the Solaris Tunable Parameters Reference Manual. Hope you will spend a lot of fast servers for docs.sun.com.

Future plans for improvement to docs.sun.com include moving the web servers from Broomfield to San Francisco to improve the service level.

I am trying to access JES documentation, which is not only copious but if I may say, rather poorly laid out. There is always another doc to fetch to figure out how some other moving part works. Soooo...when it takes seven minutes to return nothing, this makes Sun look bad. It is the public face of the company, more so than www.sun.com even because people who use it need it to get answers fast. I couldn't give a rats about the look and feel, I'm not a Windoze user dammit. I just want it to be fast and tell me what I need to know before I get too old.
