HP-UX Open Sourced!!!

Ha, ha, ha. Ha. An HP's Vice President (Martin Fink) saying we should open-source Solaris using some other license, but not CDDL. That's so funny!!

If we used another license for Solaris then HP wouldn't be able to use some of Solaris source-code files inside HP-UX!!. The fact is that they can now with CDDL. Anyone (as far as I understand the CDDL) can get the Solaris source code and use it in their software.

But, if we were to release Solaris using GPL then HP wouldn't be able to use our source-code in HP-UX, unless they were to release HP-UX under the GPL.

So the question is, is HP going to release HP-UX under the GPL,... or not?

And, just questioning, what are HP's contributions to the open-source movement? NFS? Tomcat? The XSLT compiler? JXTA? Solaris? NetBeans? Any of these?

Or maybe they've opened the standards for their (now dead) HPPA architecture as we have done?.

They have done some good work in the RDF area with Jena http://jena.sourceforge.net/ There are probably other ways they have contributed. But in any case from the article the guy sounds like a fool. A bit like their strategy. Henry

I second your request. It's time for HP to open source
a) Himalaya
b) VAX
c) HP-UX

and for IBM to open source
===============
1) AIX
2) OS2

so that their clients can start mainting them forward. Especially HP-UX is being used at numerous places -- and now that AMD/EMT is the future, open sourcing HP-UX will enable their clients to use it on OPTERONs and EMT64.

Can someone start lobbying HP/IBM to open source these ? Open sourcing OS2 with a good license might enable a Linux/Solaris/HP-UX/AIX distro which has Presentation Manager as the GUI engine rather than X -- which will be a nice way for doing a OSX clone.

OpenVMS is what HP should open source. OpenVMS on AMD Opteron would be a real good idea. Itanium is hopeless, but OpenVMS still has a strong core market in real-time environments. If HP does not do this, eventually real-time Linux variants on PowerPC or x64 will eventually take OpenVMS' share.
