Thursday May 31, 2007

Great news - we've just completed v2.0 of our HP Systems Insight Manager Integration Best Practices guide. You can get a copy of the documentation here: Managing Sun Servers in an HP Systems Insight Manager Environment 2.0

Systems covered by this document:

  • Sun Fire X2100 M2, X2200 M2 (Embedded LOM systems), X4100, X4100 M2, X4200,  X4200 M2, X4500, X4600, X4600 M2 Servers

  • Sun Blade X8400, X8420 Server Modules (all ILOM systems)

Comments:

What's the difference between ELOM and ILOM? Which is better? Why the difference? Thanks, Joe joe@via.net

Is there a document for integration with non x86 hardware like Sun Fire V440s?

Joe. Both ILOM and E-LOM deliver complete management and monitoring capability, and support key standards for easy integration. ILOM is the system Service Processor we include with our Sun x64 systems. It supports all the key industry standards including: - IPMI 2.0 - SNMP V1, V2c, V3 - SSH 2.0 - HTTPS - LDAP, RADIUS (+ MS Active Directory soon) - DMTF style Command Line ILOM is being rolled out across more Sun systems in the near future - watch out for the product announcements. ELOM, or Embedded LOM as it is known is an ODM System Service Processor we include with some of our x64 systems. In terms of functionality, E-LOM has comparable features with ILOM, but its interfaces are very slightly different. I have emailed this response to you too - let me know if you have any more questions

Justin. For integration of non-x64 systems (i.e. Sun SPARC systems), Sun offers two tools, linked from this page: http://www.sun.com/software/n1/index.jsp 1. 1. Sun Management Center (SunMC). SunMC provides in-depth monitoring and advanced management capabilities for Sun enterprise servers. There are an add-on modules which enable integration with a number of third party management suites including CA Unicenter, Tivoli and HP Openview. 2. N1 System Manager. This provides hardware lifecycle management and monitoring of groups of Sun systems, and supports the V440 and other ALOM, ILOM and Embedded LOM based systems. This tool will communicate with third parties through SNMP. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Can the HP SIM co-exist with IPMI 2.0? Or better stated, can an existing network running on DL385's accept systems using IPMI 2.0?

Hi Rich.

I'm not quite sure I understand the question.

- Are you asking if HP SIM can manage IPMI 2.0 SP based systems at the same time as DL385s? The answer is yes.
- Or are you asking if you can have both types of machine on the same management network and use HP SIM and IPMItool (or similar) to manage each? The answer is yes again.

Yeah, SunMC is great, if it weren't for the fact that it is COMPLETELY USELESS without PrimeAlert EventAction, which is a $17,800 plug-in. What functionality does it provide? Global configuration of email notifications.

Greetings Trefor, I have HP servers running HP SIM and I want to integrate my Sunfire servers with it for easier monitoring/management of my server farm. Does HP SIM require a dedicated physical network connection to SUN ILOM?
