Imitating Bill Murray

How long can you live in a hotel, even a nice one? Or more precisely, how many meals in a row can you eat out? Beijing is a great city for restaurants. In fact, I think it has no less restaurants per capita than San Francisco or New York. We Chinese do pride our culinary tradition and sophistication. But I somehow developed an aversion to restaurants after about a week.

I found supermarkets. CRC is a chain of smaller supermarkets, a cross of 7-11 and Safeway. You get most things quickly. CarreFour is Costco on steroid. They are huge supermarket, department store, and shopping center combined in one location. You grab a chart and start your hour-long shopping project.

What I did? I strolled to the produce session and bought a pound of so of my all-time favorite fruit 荔枝 (LiZhi: You must try the fresh ones. But careful, they are usually juicy and addictive). Then I bought a pack of Swiss cheese, a bottle of cheap French wine (35 RMB on promotion, was actually pretty drinkable), a bottle of yogurt (drink it like milk), a quarter of smoked duck, and bread.

I laughed at myself eating duck while doing email. Am I like the lonely Bill Murray in Lost in Translation? It is a pretty sad global executive story to tell.
