Who knows what tommorrow may bring?
Great news for anyone interested in cloud formation, open source utility computing and the future of project Caroline. Yesterday, much to the group's surprise, the formation of a new Sun organization (dare I say business unit?) was announced by Jonathan Schwartz. This new entity is specifically charged with developing and managing products and services solely related to utility computing. As a result, the entire pC team has left the auspices of the Labs and the CTO, and as of this moment, now resides, intact, in this newly created product organization. While we certainly will miss working for Greg P. and Rich Z. (you guys rock!), the opportunity to move out of research to tackle the real world engineering challenges is more than adequate compensation.
It is far too early to say what the future holds, for as you might imagine, Sun's technology portfolio in this area is far broader than just pC and the new organization is but a day old. Nevertheless, the move and transformation of our entire team from a research group into a product group, suggests that the future is bright for pC and her progeny. We hope our supporters and partners are as excited about this development as we are!
Congratulations! I wish you the very best of luck. If I could offer any advice, it would be:
1) Keep it as simple as possible
2) Include MySQL in your options
3) Be language-agnostic (Java, Ruby, Perl, etc.)
I really hope that one day Sun's utility computing services beat AWS and others, in scale, price, availability and reliability.
Go Sun!
