New CoolThreads and UltraIIIi systems announced!
Innovation Matters!
Sun today announced a new Netra Server line based on CoolThreads(TM) Technology. This expands the available market for this server segment, which is great news .
Embedded in this story was an announcement that UltraSPARC IIIi-based servers will also get a performance boost.
Sun will soon announce an upgrade of all existing Opteron Servers to RevF Opteron chips (sometimes touted as "The Next-Generation AMD Opteron Processors").
This is an across-the-board refresh of product line (with the exception of the strongest server line, based on UltraSPARC IV+, which was recently refreshed with 1.8GHz chips).
All of these come bundled with free software to aid in development of new applications: Solaris 10 OS, Sun Studio, Sun Java Studio Creator, and Sun Java Studio Enterprise.
The momentum is growing and the positive mood is being picked up in the industry. Remember the time when everyone was advising Sun that IT Doesnt Matter and that it should follow Dell's model? Nathan Brookwood, an analyst with Insight 64, attributes Sun's success to a broader, more-open product line that appeals to more buyers. "People used to ask why Sun spent so much money on R&D and why didn't they become more like Dell," Brookwood says. "Now people are asking why Dell doesn't do more innovative things."
