Sun Studio 12 patch performance improvements quantified for Core2Duo
My previous blog pointed at the first available Sun Studio patch. It mentioned that there were performance improvements for the Core2Duo architecture beyond what was in the released product.
This one quantifies the improvements we're seeing on SPECfp2000 (52%) and SPECfp2006 (34%). There are small improvements (0-3%) on SPECint2006  and 1-4% on SPECint2000 as well, but they are not as noteworthy. The system used here is a whitebox, 2 CPU, 4core 2.66GHz x5355 based system with 4GB memory. This run was a purely a comparative run and not done for a SPEC submission, so these arent official SPEC numbers (they are not numbers, anyway) but SPEC estimates, in that regard.

Now, you know, why I recommended that if you're using Sun Studio 12 for Woodcrest, Clovertown (Core2Duo) systems, then you MUST get the new patch.

Planning to submit new results to the offical SPEC site??

Theres a separate group in Sun which does this. Those announcements are usually timed around new product introductions (ie. chip revs in system, etc)
<br>
Besides, I dont know if these numbers are World Records or not. We've had about 25+ of these announcements in the past year, but this hasnt been that type of a run.
<br>
The intention behind this blog was simple: if you're using Studio 12 and want to use it on Woodcrest or Clovertown boxes and have FP-style code, you *definitely* want to get the new patch. It also closes the FP gap (and in sometimes surpasses others) on the Core2Duo architecture with other compilers.
<br>
Many of Sun's customers or potential systems customers are actively looking for validation on how well Sun is doing- or leading- with new Intel chips (blades are available right now) and this data is for them as well. IMO, Sun considers performance a differentiator on these boxes.
