Spring06: Second games was a tie

We really dominated the first half. My striker was hitting the net this week, whereas last week he was just missing. They were lucky to get the tie with us. We have one good goalie and they weren't able to score when he was in goal. Of course, the kids also likes to play forward. I wanted the win, so at half time I asked him if he wanted to play goalie the rest of the game or play forward for the 3rd quarter. He said forward, so in he went there. He had 4-5 good shots on goal and one combo that went in when it bounced off the goalie and the right wing put it in. I'm glad he got to play where he wanted.

I also thought we were a goal or two up. The rain was driving and in the last quarter I didn't push the kids. Neither team scored and it was only at the end I found out we had tied. In hindsight, the Monster wasn't in his best form and I could have played my striker instead. But this is Rec ball and I really strive to make sure all of my kids get the same amount of playing time.

I think that caught one dad out. He skipped the pregame practice and showed up in the middle of the first quarter to watch his son. His son had sat the first and fourth quarters last week. When he saw his son in and was told it was the first quarter, he couldn't believe it. I think he was assuming that 1 data point a line made.

At some point, I will turn into a coach that cares more about winning. Right now, the emphasis is about being competitive. The difference is that a win oriented coach always plays the best players and a competitive one tries to do the best with all of the players. Some coaches manage to combine both, but I've found I can be one or the other. Even if you get all stud players, someone has to yield time for another player.

I just signed us up for the BASC 2nd Annual Spring Recreation Soccer Tournament. We did the first last year with the Cheetahs (U8) and it was a blast (1-1-1 and out). Most of us actually live outside the formal Tulsa boundary and inside the Broken Arrow limits. Although if you were to ask anyone if where I lived was Tulsa or Broken Arrow, the answer you would get was Tulsa.

By the way, the tournament link may go away, so the here is the BASC link.
