I'm starting to like 1and1.com for webhosting

When I first started using 1and1.com for webhosting, I got frustrated with their emphasis on advertising their site and not seeming to help me. The straw that broke my back was when they couldn't help me load a module into their WordPress.com blog software. I called up sales and had them yank my account. The guy I talked to told me how to fix my problem - install the tarball myself.

That was over a year ago and I've been happy since then. I like being able to solve a problem by installing something.

I've since used them to host 97red.com for my son's soccer team. I've had a blast rolling my own perl scripts.

For my son's soccer club site Blitz United Soccer Club, I decided to go with Network Solutions which wasn't an easy choice. I did it in part because the board of directors had some positive experience with Network Solutions and it was the quickest way to move the domain pointers (administered by Network Solutions).

I held my ground and got the Unix offering. And I almost lost it when I realized that while the host was running Unix, I had no frigging ssh or shell access! What I have to do is use lftp to reverse mirror the site from my home web server.

But you know, I now actually like the model. It keeps an instant backup ready and it forces me to make the changes and view the results before I push. Right now I'm not using a database or PHP on the host, which may change my mind. By the way, my users just love the mail filtering and interface that Network Solutions offers. I've gotten a lot of leeway due to just that.

Hi Tom, thanks for your feedback. If you have any issues with Blitz United’s website, I hope you’ll drop us a line at listen [at] networksolutions [dot] com.

Thanks,

Steve

Hey Steve,

Once again I fail to realize how public my blog can be at times.

I don't think I am going to be having any problems. The off-site development and push model ought to scale as we ramp up on complexity.

And I don't think we are anywhere near pushing capacity with the email offerings. Which again, I can not stress how much of a nice surprise it was to offer the club people. They went from forwarding their email to google.com to filter spam to just using the 'mail' subdomain.

This rushed experience took me from recommending not to use Network Solutions to being happy to recommend it to friends. The pricing model is competitive and the features are flexible enough for me.

Thanks,
Tom

In my opinion 1and1 is the absolute worst hosting company in the world. It is no mistake that the PA BBB has given 1and1 their lowest rating"F."

It has a Unix shell and I don't have a business which depends on it.

I've gotten what I wanted the one time I was fed up enough to quit. I.e., I had another hosting company all setup and was ready to pull the trigger.

It was the closest I've come to running from a hosting site. :->

In my opinion everyone should run from 1and1. It should be a warning that when their phone is answered by a recording that tells you if you have gotten a notice from NCO, a collection agency, to press a certain number. If they are a reputable business, why do they have to send so many accounts to a collection agency?
Patrick Frey (Patterico) of the Los Angeles District Attorneys Office alleges his domain was high jacked and put up for auction on SEDO. SEDO is an associate company of 1and1.
Patterico: “I believe I’m facing massive incompetence, thievery, or very possibly a deliberate combination of the two. It feels like evil intent — but not for political reasons. It feels like cyber extortion — people going after the almighty dollar. Commenter’s have pointed out corporate ties between 1&1, which can’t seem to process my timely renewal, and Sedo/Domcollect, which stood to profit from 1&1’s failure. Usually, corporate incompetence does not earn the corporation money — but 1&1 and its related companies have found a way to make money off of their own slipshod procedures.”
Patterico was able to regain his domain.
Also Investigative journalist, Kelli Jack, has written 30 articles about this company and has a suit pending against them. Kelli alleges that 1and1 stole her domain name and sold it. Kelli states: "1and1 should be shut down." As of today Kelli is working with the Pennsylvania Attorney General.
I have filed complaints with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Trade Commission, Eastern Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau, ICANN, and others. I recommend everyone else having a problem consider doing the same.

The Washington DC, Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau has given 1and1 Internet their lowest rating “F" Read comments on the BBB why. Read some customer comments on Red Flag.
Don’t bother trying to access my 2 URL: warthpublishinginc.com, Migraine-Abort.com
They are gone with my money and numerous domains I had at 1and1.

I would like to know if you have had any success in your reports against 1&1? We are currently in a bind because of them reporting us to a collector's agency over one missed payment, due to a technical error.
Thanks,
Jana
