| Shiny, Happy Hell Spawn
Have I ever mentioned how much I hate dandelions? In German they're called Löwenzahn, which means "lion tooth," which is a more appropriate description for the foul little beasties. In the US, they were just kind of annoying. Here in Germany, they're an epidemic!
Since spring appeared about 3 weeks ago, I get up early every Saturday to mow the dandelions. (Grass has become a secondary concern.) Then, by Monday morning, I look out the window to see a sea of little, shiny, happy, yellow flowers. I just know they're mocking me!
Last year I tried using weed and feed to keep them under control. The grass liked it, but the dandelions were largely unimpressed. This year, I've discovered a new technique. I drive a spade into the ground about 3 inches from the base of the dandelion and then lever the dirt up. About 9 out of 10 times I'm able to then pull the whole plant up, root included. I now spend 10 minutes every morning killing dandelions. It gets rid of the weeds and helps me start the day with a smile on my face.
It's somewhat obscene how much pleasure I derive from pulling up a dandelion, root and all. Having just watched the Dr. Who episode with the Dalek, I have to wonder what that says about me. I remember before I had to worry about yard maintenance, when I used to just think they were pretty. Ah, the simplicity of youth...
