Spring Has Sprung

Spring has finally arrived in Regensburg. This is the fourth day in a row that I've been able to wear shorts. This weekend I took my first bike trip of the year. About 25km round trip, including a "brief", pause at a beer garden about midway. I wasn't expecting the sun to be quite as strong as it was, and now I look like I should be served with a side of scampi for $9.99. (For the non-American readers, that was a reference to the restaurant chain, Red Lobster.)

Spring in Bavaria is really quite lovely. There's plum, apple, and cherry trees all over the place, not to mention the hordes of roses and various other flowering plants, bushes, and trees. The fields are all bright green. The birds are all twitterpated. Any minute now the entire landscape is going to break out into song.

To celebrate the release of Grid Engine 6.0u4, our managers took the whole team out to a beer garden on the Danube for a long lunch yesterday. Very nice. If you've never been to a beer garden in Bavaria on a river in the springtime, you haven't lived yet. The waitresses really do wear dirndls. The beer comes in two sizes: big (0.5L) and huge (1.0L). At this particular beer garden, there were chickens in a pen beside where we sat, that clucked and cooed through the entire meal. These are the times it feels good to be in Germany.
