What's in a Name?

You may have noticed that I changed the name of my blog. For the benefit of my international readers, I thought I should explain what it means.

If you ask any American what the original joke was, they'll tell you it is:

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: To get to the other side!

(In case you're wondering why that's a joke, the humor is in the obvious and accurate answer. The joke is that it isn't a joke. No, we don't think it's funny either.)

If you ask any American what the second joke was, you're likely to get:

Q: What's black and white and red all over?
A: A newspaper!

(In case that doesn't make sense, remember that in English, "red" and the past tense of the verb "to read" are pronounced the same. No, we don't think that one is funny either.)

Anyway, that's where I got the title. Now you know.

Only in Bavaria

A friend of a non-blogging coworker here in the Regensburg office managed to snap this picture while driving up the A92 from the airport towards Landshut.

First, both the picture and the sheep are real. I have a second shot from a slightly different angle which proves it. Second, the A92 is an Autobahn; it's a major, high-speed limited access highway. With sheep. Gotta love Bavaria.

An Even Worse Day

I had a very hectic morning this morning. I had to drive to Regensburg to take the cat to the vet, drive home to drop the cat off, and then drive the other direction to Regenstauf to take the car to the shop, so I could ride my bicycle back to Regensburg to get to the office for a meeting.

This was all made more complicated by the fact that vets in Germany don't do appointments. It's always first come, first served. I was trying to be at the vet 20 minutes before they opened the doors so I could get in and get out quickly, but road construction made me late. Then the vet was a little late in showing up. Nevertheless, I managed to get out of there with exactly enough time to make my appointment at the service garage.

I flew home, dumped the cat off with my wife and took off for Regenstauf. There's always a bit of a traffic jam where the Regenstauf old city starts because cars parked on the narrow street make two-way traffic a little delicate. As usual, traffic ground to a crawl as I approached the old city. I noticed, though, that there was no oncoming traffic. I found that rather odd.

As the line of traffic slowly filed through the bottleneck, I saw the reason why there was no oncoming traffic, and I realized that my day could be going so much worse. Apparently a little old lady found the cobblestone sidewalk a little too jarring, and so was pushing her walker down the street! Because the street is so narrow at that point (thanks to the cars parked on the street), the poor driver stuck behind her didn't have room to go around. He had to literally drive at the pace of an old lady with a walker! I'm not sure I'll ever be able to properly complain about traffic again!
