I like chess, but I've never ventured into playing online because I have always felt like it would be too big of a drain on my free time. One game of chess can take 2 hours when I'm involved. Well, one night when a (non-blogging) friend of mine and I were playing chess at the Kneitinger brew pub in old city Regensburg, a drunken patron came over to "assist" in winning the game. Among the nonesense he drunkenly slurred was a recommendation to try GameKnot. I took it for what it was worth and ignored his suggestion. Well, tonight, out of pure boredom, I went to GameKnot. This is the chess site I've been wishing existed! (Of course, all chess sites might be like this. I don't know because I never played online chess.) The important thing about it is that games don't have to happen real time. When you start a game, you can set a time limit for the next move. 3 days is the usual! That means I can play a move here and a move there, as I have time.
Oh, yeah. They have some kind of referral deal, so if you visit the site and decide it looks cool, give me the credit. My username there is also templedf, if you'd like to have a go at it.

Dan, we'll have to get together along with Charles and Victoria at the next Java ambassador meeting. I played competitively for 4 years, charles and Victoria did as well. Probably more of us, too. I personally think Victoria will wipe the floor with us, but hey, it would be fun.
