Leopard install, lost password

Installing Leopard may result in an inability to login, even though the password is known. This Apple support document has one recovery method, distilled here for quick reference. Anywhere "username" appears, change it to the affected username, that is, the one to which you cannot login.

1. Boot in single user mode (hold Command-s during startup)
2. When the root prompt comes up, type mount -uw /
3. type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
4. type dscl . -delete /Users/username AuthenticationAuthority
5. type passwd username
6. type reboot

MobileMe launch July 9th

dot mac will be offline on July 9th, 2008, 1800 - 0000 PDT (6pm - midnight). MobileMe should be available at some point during that period.

Mighty Mouse scroll bar

The Mighty Mouse from Apple has some interesting quirks. My favorite is the "stuck scroll ball". From time to time, the scroll ball will not scroll in one or more directions. The fix: blow compressed air around it, or hold it upside down on a textured surface like a mousepad and roll it around a bit.

I love Apple and Macs, and that love affair is such that I overlook little quirks :)

Omnigraffle beta available for download

Omnigraffle 5.0.1 beta 4 is available for download. This beta release requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later, in other words, Leopard only. The most interesting thing in the release notes is a Visio import fix.

"Tabbing" through forms with FireFox on MacOSX

Have you ever noticed in Firefox on Macs how "tabbing" in forms seems to skip certain fields, in particular, pulldowns? A buddy of mine was watching me tab through a website in Firefox. He grabbed my arm and said, "hey dude, how did you tab to that pulldown??". The answer lies in System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts. Select the "All controls" box:
