November 7th, 1885 - Canadian Pacific Railway completed
Railroads have always fascinated me: orderly rails, ordered destinations.
On this day, Nov 7th, 1885, the "last spike" was driven in BC for the Canadian Pacific Railroad.

August 8, 1786: Mont Blanc
Mont Blanc is a 15000+ foot mountain on the French-Italian border. It was climbed for the first time on this day August 8th, 1786. The French and Italians are still disputing whether the summit of the mountain is in French or Italian territory. Sounds like summit-envy to me.

The Sedition Act, 1798
The Sedition Act was enacted on this day, July 14, in 1798. Incredibly, the Act contained language which made it a crime to write or publish "scandalous and malicious writing or writings" against the government of the United States. Naturally, Thomas Jefferson made it clear that the Act was in violation of the Tenth and First Amendments.
Things to think about: The Sedition Act expired in 1801 without being renewed -- too quickly after its enactment to be realistically challenged in the Court system.
