Where I was on 9/11/01

A tragedy occurred seven years ago today, a senseless, pointless loss of life. My condolences to the family and friends of those we lost.

I did not know about the event at the time it happened. I was on BART between San Francisco and Concord. My manager at the time called me on my cell and without further ado announced "If you get stuck in San Francisco, I am authorizing you to stay in the most expensive, swanky hotel you can find". While this was good news - The Mandarin occurred to me right away - I had no idea what he was talking about. I had overheard a conversation amongst my fellow passengers where "airport closing" had been mentioned, but nothing specific, and I gave it no thought at the time. After 5 minutes of talking I finally said, "Dave, what on Earth are you talking about?" And then he told me. I was stunned. Angry. Sad. Emotionally drained within seconds. A roller-coaster between fury and sadness engulfed me for some time. My friends from all over the world who knew of my constant travel called throughout the day to first check on my whereabouts, and secondly to offer their support. A thank-you once again to you, my friends, you know who you are.

UBL, are you reading? I'm watching you.
