I had forgotten how many frameworks are covered in the NetBeans set of quickstart documents; check out the list:
GlassFish v3 is scheduled to go final at the end of November and the builds are stabilizing quickly. Our test suites are very exhaustive but the only way to be sure that the final artifacts work for you is if you try them in your specific configuration. I was looking through the list and it made me think that FishCAT for GF v3 just completed its first week (See Judy's mail and report) and that team filed more than 20 bugs and more than half have already been fixed. so...
If you use one of the Java Frameworks, or your favorite app or framework, with the latest GF v3 builds and find issues, help us, and the rest of the community, by filing a bug. Thanks!

You may have experienced difficulties in the past week trying to access the glassfish.dev.java.net website (or via glassfish.org which redirects there). Having said all this, things should be almost back to normal, but if you're still not able to access the site, please send email to escalation_manager @ java-net.dev.java.net with your IP address, wether it's a static one or provider-allocated and the country you're working from.
Also, note that if you're looking for a download of a stable version of GlassFish (including GlassFish v3 preview), you can certainly do that from the sun.com pages and even get to the very latest promoted build using the update tool.

I've pushed out the Sept 2009 Adoption Stats for GlassFish and it shows a record month on downloads, registrations and admin pings. Of all the numbers, I like best the number of unique registered users: 387,384! It does look like we might be back to a growth path but Google trends (cached, live) and jobs@Indeed (cached, live) still show wait-and-see. Do notice that our competitors are down at Google trends, while we are level. Let's see what the next months bring. |

Sujit has published a blog entry showing a nice example of how to easily leverage Spring DM within OpenESB v3 / Project Fuji; both to either expose a service, or to call existing services on the "bus". The "bus" (a.k.a. normalized message router) adds the option of a message based, loosely coupled and asynchronous contract to an OSGi environment such as Felix or GlassFish v3. The simple API mechanism allows the (interface centric) OSGi services to implement and invoke message based services. Fuji then includes a host of advanced constructs, including the ability to route, transform and augment these messages. The sample application bundle as well as instructions on installing the Spring DM bundles is available on the Fuji wiki. |

Gregory Bond was right, when he wrote, this is the year of converged application frameworks, while announcing Converge. The number of frameworks and libraries available for sip application development continue to increase. Given the asynchronous nature of SIP, debugging issues in a SIP application server could turn out to be a nightmare. Tools like Wireshark are widely used for tracing SIP messages in the network. SailFin v2 implements a new feature that allows users to inspect SIP message flow in the container more effectively. Take a look at Peter's one pager and Sankar's blog on SIP Message Inspection for more details. |

The latest sustaining (for-fee) release of the GlassFish Server is now available: GFv2.1p5 fixes 27 new bugs GFv2.1p5 is also a patch release (p11) for the earlier GFv2U2; collectively all the patch releases in that family addressed 211 bugs. Sustaining releases are available at the Basic level of Sun GlassFish Portfolio; higher subscription levels entitle different levels of customer support and access to the GlassFish Enterprise Manager |
Recall that all our bug fixes also get incorporated into the next public release, in this case GFv2.1.1; patches give our customers the benefits of timely releases and isolated bug fixes; check Sun's GlassFish Support Model for more details.

I have mixed feelings about the current arrangement of Twitter widgets at TheAquarium. I like that they help me track conversations and discover news and opinions but the widget takes some time to load and too often the content is blank - I assume infrastructure problems, which they now have money to fix. One of the areas that has been improved significantly in GlassFish v3 is monitoring - see Prashanth's Functionality Overview. Most of the functionality is in the core product but some added value features will be part of the next version of the GlassFish Enterprise Manager available through Sun's commercial Sun GlassFish Portfolio. Two recent posts by Sreeni explain how to use the new functionality to Enable/disable monitoring and attach Btrace-agent and to Create pluggable container-monitoring elements. The new monitoring functionality can also be used with JRuby, as Arun describes in How to monitor a Rails app using asadmin, JavaScript, jConsole, REST. |

The guys at ZeroTurnaround (makers of JRebel) have been running a survey on redeploy and restart turnaround time in Java App Servers that has >1100 responses so far. The survey's 3 questions ask about AppServer usage and redeploy and restart time. Although doing a good survey is tricky - for example, in this case the sample is self-selected (but not as bad as with the Reader's Choice), the impact of (Re)Deployment tooling/configurations is unknown and the time is estimated, not measured - I think this one is useful in calling attention to the importance of the full develop/deploy/debug cycle. GFv2 did very well and v3 is even faster! |
Jevgeni's analysis has some reasonable comments although some others seem unwarranted by the data. The most popular containers were Tomcat (29%), JBoss (25%), WLS (13%), WAS (12%) and GF (10%) (OC4J is 4%), with the caveat about self-selected samples. As a reminder of the importance of methodology, I'll point out that only 1 respondent listed Geronimo; readers may compare to that EDC Survey from Last Year.
Also note the impact of twitter and reddit in the comment thread - there are 117 comments as of this post... almost all of them very short 'heads-up' with no added value - sigh...

Hal Stern's latest Innovating@Sun podcast interview features Peter Reiser discussing Community Equity, a social value system that measures one's online social capital. This system has been successfully used internally for over a year and is now available for general use. The Webspace team has also made an alpha integration available for GlassFish Webspace Server via its Update Center-based developer repository, enabling portal user social capital to be accurately measured (You may also remember the CommunityOne Webcast and presentation). |
Future works in progress include semantic integration with Kiwi, and an implementation of the Activity Streams spec (enabling deeper integration with Facebook, MySpace, StatusNet, and other social platforms).

The GlassFish Tools Bundle for Eclipse is our all-in-one bundle that includes the Eclipse IDE (wiki) - the main alternative to that other IDE - the GlassFish Server and the GlassFish Plugin (home, intro), all in a single download. The GlassFish Plugin is updated quite frequently but, fortunately, it is quite easy to update the plugin from the bundle so you don't have to do a full-reinstall. The latest versions of the plugins are 1.0.32 (9/4/09) and 1.0.33 (9/11/09) - that's just a week apart - and a full list of changes is always available through the Release Notes. |
Although WTP's support for Java EE 6 has been Delayed until mid-2010 the GlassFish plugin provides critical Java EE 6 wizards - see Arun's latest entry in his TOTD series: Java EE 6 (Servlet 3.0 and EJB 3.1) wizards in Eclipse - and additional wizards are planned by GlassFish v3 FCS.
These plugins can be installed on Eclipse 3.4 Ganymede and Eclipse 3.5 Galileo. Galileo seems to have a nice set of features (Wiki, blogathon, DZone) and a co-bundle of Eclipse 3.5.1, GlassFish v3 and the latest plugins will be available when GlassFish v3 ships.
