JavaZone 2009 - GlassFish and Hudson
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

JavaZone 2009 is this week, Sept 9-10th, at Oslo Spektrum. It looks like a nice venue, see Wikipedia and Bird's Eye, and they do all sorts of events, from Tom Jones to Muse.

It looks like a great conference; like last year, Alexis will be there presenting on GlassFish v3 and this year Kohsuke will also attend to present on Hudson.

For a full list of the presentations, check out the Agenda and the List of Sessions.

Agile Development is very well represented in the conference, see among others:

Continuous Performance Testing in the Cloud by Ole-Martin Mørk, Eivind Barstad Waaler (also on Hudson)
Agile Application Management by Jahn Arne Johnsen
Agile Enterprise Development with Groovy and Grails by Björn Beskow
Agile Specification Quality Control: How to do inspections on any kinds of IT Development outputs for measurement of major defects by Kai Thomas Gilb, Tom Gilb
Scaling Agile Software Development: Strategies for Applying Agile in Complex Situations by Scott W. Ambler

Free webinar: GlassFish ESB Intelligent Event Processor (IEP) In Action
  Posted by fkieviet in OpenESB

OpenESB's IEP SE (Intelligent Event Processor Service Engine) is an open source Complex Event Processing (CEP) and Event Stream Processing (ESP) engine. The IEP enables SOA and Event-Driven Architectures.

On Wednesday, Tom Barrett will explore and demonstrate the IEP in a webinar. Tom Barrett is a Software Systems Engineer and a well known Sun Java Ambassador. In this webinar, he will give an introduction of CEP, provide an overview of the IEP, and showcase two examples. If you're thinking about using the IEP in your own projects, this may be an ideal way to get started with CEP quickly.

When: Wednesday, September 9, at 10:00 am PDT (1:00 pm EDT / 19.00 CET); Duration 1 hour

JSR 299 and 330 progress in latest GlassFish v3
  Posted by alexismp in GlassFish

Code snippet

As previously reported last month, JavaEE 6 will include JSR330 and JSR299. Roger Kitain already has a simple yet detailed blog entry on using JCDI (JSR 299, ex-WebBeans) in GlassFish. He walks through JSF 2.0 and JSR 299/JSR 330 code. You'll see there @Inject, @Qualifier, @SessionScoped, @ApplicationScoped, all in action.

If you're curious enough to test this sample, I would recommend using NetBeans 6.8 M1 - register a recent GlassFish v3 build (promoted build web 62 for instance), create a Web Application with Java EE 6 as the platform level and copy paste the various pieces. No further settings are required.

Overall, this shows progress since Cay's previous entry on the topic. Other posts on similar topics are marked with the "jsr299" and "jsr330" tags. Keep an eye on Roger's blog for more entries on this topic.

OpenSSO Express Build 8 Released
  Posted by superpat in OpenSSO

Express 8

As I just reported in a little more detail over at Superpatterns, we released OpenSSO Express Build 8 yesterday, including features such as our new One Time Password feature, the Fedlet for .Net and a new task flow for enabling single sign-on to Salesforce.com.

It's worth noting that OpenSSO Express Builds are supported builds, released on an approximately 3 month cycle between Enterprise builds. Customers simply buy support for OpenSSO and then choose which build to deploy; the main difference between the two is that we release hot patches and service packs for the Enterprise build, while fixes in the Express build are rolled into the next Express build (no hot patches or service packs). In this way, customers who are keen to deploy the very latest OpenSSO features with support can do so without having to wait up to 12 months for the next Enterprise release. More on this release in the OpenSSO Express 8 release notes; more on the Express build concept in the OpenSSO Express FAQ.

European Commission - In-Depth Investigation into Sun-Oracle Deal
  Posted by pelegri in General

ALT DESCR

The boards of directors for both companies Approved the Sun-Oracle Deal, Sun's Shareholders Approved it and the US DoJ Approved it, but the European Union is still investigating.

The EU Commission is the executive branch of the EU and its cabinet has 27 Commissioners. Of these, Neelie Kroes (@Wikipedia, @CNet) is the Commissioner for Competition and her office just announced an In-Depth Investigation (also see NYTimes). As they say, story evolving...

Related news are tagged Sun+Oracle. I also post links to related industry news at TheAquarium@Twitter.

Added I've not done any systematic tracking of how the press is reacting to this announcement, but the sources I follow are negative on the motivations spelled out in the EU ruling; see below for a few links:

GlassFish v3 Preview Updated
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

It took a bit longer than anticipated, but we have updated the repositories behind GlassFish v3 Preview (STABLE from glassfish.sun.com). You are most likely to notice this through the see new SoftwareUpdate tool, but you might also see it through the GUI UpdateTool or the embedded UpdateTool, or do it manually via the CLI.

Full details in Alexis writeup and Abhijit's announcement.

The whole thing has been working very well for me in recent builds but this is software, so please let us know if you experience any issues.

Old Tools Never Die - WGet and Access to SunSolve
  Posted by pelegri in General

ALT DESCR

Good old tools never die, like wget (and the beam torque wrench!). Gerry Haskins has written an overview on how to (continue to) use wget to access SunSolve repositories (where the For-Fee Patches for GlassFish are stored) now that authentication is enforced.

The short summary is "Use versions 1.10.x and 1.11.1, but not 1.11!", but Gerry gets into more details. You can also look at the Document at SunSolve.

New Webinar Recording: Load Balancing GlassFish Clusters
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

Last month, John and Shreedhar gave a free webinar on High Availability through Load Balancing of GlassFish Clusters. The presentation was well attended, see posts from John and from an attendee, Daniel-Noz, and the recording of the webinar is now available.

As part of an effort to improve the effectiveness of this and other GF Portfolio Resources, I've created a very short Feedback Survey; please consider using it to help us help you.

And, if you are interested in this topic, also check out this White Paper Application Scalability and Fault Tolerance with GlassFish Load Balancer (and companion survey).

Sun and Oracle @ OracleWorld - October 11-15
  Posted by pelegri in General

ALT DESCR

Oracle's web site is running a teaser on Sun + Oracle is Faster that says: Check back on October 14 as we demonstrate Oracle's commitment to Sun hardware and Sun SPARC.

October 11-15 is Oracle OpenWorld, which is held at Moscone Center, like like JavaOne. Unlike J1, the bulk of the presentations at OW are about the Oracle Applications (Wiki, General Sessions).

OpenWorld does include a Developer Event that is happening at the Hilton Hotel, but all this is more than six weeks from now and we are Still Waiting, so we don't know if we will be able to Register as Employees, whether we should plan to give presentations, or who-knows-what...

Added - Also see this message from Larry (I've been told it will run as an Ad in a few places, including the WSJ).

Improved Download Table for GlassFish @ Java.Net
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

We have done some cleanup on the GlassFish Download Page at Java.Net. The new table-based layout is quite compact and fits in the screen of many modern laptops. We tried to make the table readable and to make the descriptions brief but informative; a link to the full Comparison between v2 and v3 is still included.

Check it out and let us know if you see areas that need further improvements.
