JSR 299 (nee WebBeans) Public Review is Approved by the JCP
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

ALT DESCR

The Executive Committee for EE/SE has approved the Public Review for JSR 299 (see JSR 299 - WebBeans is Dead. Long Live Java Contexts and Dependency Injection!).

The vote was 14 YES and 2 ABSTAIN - see Ballot Results. The voters raised a number of concerns but they all recognized the big recent improvements. Good progress!

PS. Bean Validation (JSR 303) was also approved with the same vote but with no significant technical comments. See Ballot Results.

More Java EE 6 Specs - JSP
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

ALT DESCR

The JCP process defines two specification processes. The changes to JSP 2.1 for Java EE 6 are done using the Maintenance process in the JSR 245 EG led by Kin-Man.

There are two sets of changes: to the EL (Kin-Man's Overview, formal ChangeList), and JSP proper (Overview, ChangeList).

Both sets of changes are small; probably the biggest change is the addition of the ability to invoke methods in EL expressions. The review ends on March 3rd, please send feedback to Kin-Man.

Java EE 6 Public Review, Web Profile and WebBeans
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

ALT DESCR

Very significant (forward!) movement on the Java EE 6 spec: Roberto reports that the JavaEE 6 Public Review Draft is now available for download from the JCP site. He, and the rest of the JSR 316 group, solicits your feedback at "javaee-spec-feedback at sun dot com".

Two specs are available: one for the complete Java EE 6 and one for the Web Profile.

The new Web Profile currently includes the following specs: Servlet 3.0, JSP 2.2, EL 1.2, JSR-45, JSTL 1.2, JSF 2.0, JSR-250 1.1, EJB 3.1 Lite, JTA 1.1 and JPA 2.0. The list is not yet final, though, and there are three specifications that are still being discussed very actively.

JAX-RS has been very well received and is already implemented in several products, including our own Jersey. JAX-RS (1.1) is in the full JavaEE 6 but the EG decided it was too early to include it in the Web profile at this point. The situation with BeansValidation is slightly different: the spec just went into Public Review and, although it looks good, the JavaEE EG is waiting for feedback before deciding what to do.

The area that is still changing the most is JSR 299, previously known as WebBeans and now known as Java Contexts and Dependency Injection. Gavin and the EG has incorporated Extensive Feedback and the JavaEE 6 EG is soliciting feedback from the community on its inclusion on the platform spec. Please consider downloading the specification and providing feedback to both the JSR 299 and the JSR 316 Expert Groups.

Roberto also points that they are a bit behind but that a new schedule has not yet been created. Overall, though, these are very good news. Onward towards GlassFish v3 :-)

Implementation for Latest JSF 2.0 - Now in the Update Center
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

ALT DESCR

The JSF 2.0 team last month released an implementation of the new JSF 2.0 PRD (see JCP vote) and an updated JSF 1.2.11.

The releases are available at the GFv3 Update Center (see, e.g., Mac) and can be installed using the stand-alone UpdateTool or the Admin Console. Let us know if you encounter any problems.

This implementation has all PRD features including the Declarative Events described by Jason, but the EG is still working on additional features like state management. A few others, like bookmarkable URLs, are still being discussed and may or not make it.

Clarity Accounting provides Online Accounting with GlassFish, Hibernate, GWT and 3Tera
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

Our 36th Adoption Story comes from Vancouver thanks to Arun:

ALT DESCR

Clarity Accounting provides an SAAS online accounting service using GlassFish Server. The implementation uses multiple OSS components including Hibernate, PostreSQL and GWT and the service is deployed on 3Tera AppLogic Grid (3Tera is a GlassFish Technology Partner).

See Questionnaire for full details. Clarity Accounting went live in September 2008 and their site looks like a well-cared small business; it was created by one person over 12 months (6 part-time) - I love to see the way we are enabling these small business to appear. See Questionnaire for full details.

For more adoption stories, check our Informal Stories. We are always looking for stories showcasing production use as these are critical to the growth of our community. If you are a happy user please consider sharing your story by sending us mail to stories at sun dot com.

Java EE 6 - JCP Update...
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

During the break, I noticed that the Bean Validation spec had gone into Public Review Draft. That spec is the last of the batch being considered for JavaEE 6. Below is a full list based on a pass through JCP (will adjust if I missed any); all of them are either in PRD or past it; the only exception is Java EE 6 itself (JSR 316) which, by definition, lags them all.

ALT DESCR

• WebBeans (Gavin King, JSR 299, @TA )
• Bean Validation (Emmanuel Bernard, JSR 303, @TA )
• JSF 2.0 (Ed Burns & Roger Kitain, JSR 314, @TA )
• Servlet 3.0 (Rajiv Mordani, JSR 315, @TA )
• JPA 2.0 (Linda DeMichiel, JSR 317, @TA )
• EJB 3.1 (Ken Saks, JSR 318 @TA )
• JCA 1.6 (Binod PG & Sivakumar Thyagarajan, JSR 322, @TA )

Some of these specs have already been voted on: EJB 3.1 (results) and JPA 2.0 (results); for some others the vote starts on Jan 6th: JCA 1.6, Servlet 3.0, JSF 2.0, and a last batch starts on Feb 3rd: Bean Validation, WebBeans.

Duke Resting and Reading in a comfy Chair

Sun USA shuts down between Christmas and New Year, so we are going to add a few extra days at each end and we will take a break from now until Jan 4th. Time to recharge batteries, read a few books, clean house, play a few games (virtual and otherwise), celebrate the holidays and be with the family...

It's been a very busy and rewarding year for all of us; our best wishes to all of you, and hope to see you next year.

Catching Up - JavaFX Launch and VirtualBox 2.1 Recap
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

One last launch recap before the holiday break; this one will be far shorter than the OpenSolaris 2008.11 recap as I'm about to turn into a pumkin.

Radio Receiver Icon

JavaFX - We released JavaFX on Dec 4th, a couple of days later than originally scheduled. The launch was preceded by the release of the new JavaFX Script Language Reference and a few blog entries, but the bulk of the posts happened after. Danny has done a couple of nice recaps - check top 10 things and then a very complete News Recap.

After the launch, the team took the show to Devoxx (nee Javopolis); Danny gave one of the keynotes in day one (see his Show Report), and Mark did the same for Day 2 - modularity being key to delivering Java on a multiplicity of platforms, see Mark's notes on the Modular Java Platform and Jigsaw. Danny provided a summary of JavaFX in Devoxx; judged by the whiteboards (caveat emptor and all of that), JavaFX was pretty well received - see the "ultra-cool" section in the Java Cool Wall.

Ah!... And Mr. Jeet now has his Own Blog; welcome to the blogosphere! :-)

VirtualBox 2.1 - The last recap is for VirtualBox 2.1, released on Nov 17th. This is yet another strong release from the VirtualBox team; they are turning releases very quickly (see earlier reports tagged VirtualBox).

Two summaries of the functionality are from Joerg and TheFatBloke. The release includes support for hardware features, improved ease of use and interoperability. It all looks very good, and I really want to host a webinar set at TheAquarium Online on the VirtualBox; the calendar is pretty crowded but we added an extra optional slot per week to cover cases like this.

The VB team records over 8M d/ls of VB - which is very good; if you want to try it out, you can check the latest ChangeLog and then go to the Download page.

... Reglib or JQuery, IPS and UpdateCenter, and Wikipedia and MySQL
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

Some recent news of interest:

Radio Receiver Icon

JQuery is a small and fast JavaScript Framework (Wikipedia, homepage). JQuery is very popular (Google Trends!), but Greg (Reimer - one of the developers of Sun.Com) was interested in exploring a declarative approach to JavaScript programming and created reglib (for registration library). JavaScript fiends can start at Reg's reglib vs JQuery post, and then browse though his Other posts, and then go Download the code.

The pack(5) (i.e. IPS) toolkit continues to make progress. Although it came from the OpenSolaris effort it is really platform independent and IPS is at the core of the new Update Center for GlassFish v3. Check the IPS blog and the IPS Best Practices Wiki. A recent good presentation is outlined in Intro to pkg(5) - I'd like to schedule one for TheAquarium Online series.

Finally a story that is a couple of weeks old; Wikipedia is going to use Sun's OpenStorage products to run MySQL (see Jonathan's entry). Hopefully we will see many more to come in the future as we continue to Optimize the Performance of MySQL on Sun's Systems.

... EoD in JavaEE 6, More JSF 2.0 Samples, IzPack, OpenStorage and Tufte, Sun Restructuring
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Radio Receiver Icon

Java EE 6 builds on the Ease of Development theme of its predecessor and Roberto's latest post sketches the new additions, which includes the improvements in Servlet 3.0 (tune in to Rajiv's presentation on Dec 4th), JAX-RS, JSF 2.0, EJB 3.0, WebBeans, Bean Validation and more. Roberto's webinar is on Dec 18th.

Jim has a series of posts showing the benefits of JSF 2.0; the latest entry shows how to write a Spinner Component, and then how to Adding Styles to it and, then, making the implementation Fully Reusable. Check it out!

Juien created a new IzPack installer for GlassFish v3; check out the GFv3 Installer, a description of the New Features developed for it, and the corresponding IzPack 4.1.1 announcement.

I'm a fan of Tufte, so it is very pleasant to see a reference to his work in Paul Murphy's Review at ZDNet of our recent OpenStorage release. Paul refers to the systems ability for real time monitoring and action (like in this screenshot); hopefully we will see more exploration of these principles in the industry. Thanks to Brian for the tip.

The biggest news for Sun this week was Friday's Restructuring announcement (PR, Tim O'Brien, The Register). It is still early so just some observations based on publicly available information: GlassFish is mentioned prominently (and positively) in all the news pieces; it will be good to be closer to the MySQL folks; we will all miss Rich Green; by all metrics GlassFish adoption continues to grow (see, for example, Admin Ping Map).

... Releases and Acquisitions: JavaFX, OpenSSO Enterprise, G2One and SpringSource
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

A compilation of today's news of interest - Special Release and Acquisitions Edition:

Radio Receiver Icon

SpringSource has announced the acquisition of G2One the Groovy and Grails specialist company. Congrats to both! See the reports from The Register and DZone, including comments from Rod on their New Role in the JCP EC. Maybe SpringSource will be able to finish JSR 241? It has been more than 4 years since the EG formed...

Sun has released OpenSSO Enterprise 8.0 (previously FAM, previously Access Federated Manager, previously Access Manager) with full enterprise support. Check out: download, documentation and Java.Net site. Also see Mark's Short Overview, and entries tagged OpenSSO.

And Danny promises that JavaFX will be finally Released on December 2nd. He also points to a nice JavaFX Overview at InfoQ and to the current RC download. More info as we get closer to the launch.

Report on Special Webinar in Spanish - And Poll at JavaHispano
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

ALT DESCR

This last Thursday I hosted a Special Webinar for the Spanish-speaking community. The webinar home page (spanish, english) has links to the presentation (SlideShare, PDF) and to the recording.

The presentation went very well and there was interest from the audience in making it a regular event. Future events will also be hosted at TheAquarium Online and we will announce it here, at JavaHispano and at other sites.

Also, if you participate at JavaHispano, check out the results (vote) for their poll on AppServer usage - Tomcat is number one but I'm surprised GlassFish is number three, ahead of WAS and WLS and close to JBoss. I hope next year things will look even better.
