... Sparklines on Jersey, Servlet 3.0, Profiling GFv2, Survey Methodologies, and Barça in Miami
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Radio Receiver Icon

From Jersey in honor of the recent Jersey 1.0 Release: Paul writes about a new rev of the set of Jersey Samples (browse) that includes some implementation of Sparklines (and, as a Tufte fan... thanks!). And, Marc has been quoted in SD Times about JAX-RS and SOAP; read what he actually says, ignore the title "Sun moving away from SOAP"; we do both SOAP and REST.

Servlet 3.0 is getting closer to a Public Draft (with the rest of JavaEE 6), and Deepa has published a Intro to Servlet 3.0 at Java.Net. Some of the details apply to the old draft, so be sure to check Rajiv's comments.

Performance is always a hot topic, so check this note from one of our performance top guys, Binu John, on Profiling GFv2 with Sun Studio.

Rich's Comment on an EDC Report on AppServer Rankings started a fairly active TSS thread. As I wrote in my Comment at Savio's blog, the report is really a "User Satisfaction Survey", and, without more data, it is hard to interpret beyond that. BTW, if you download the report, consider agreeing to taking the survey and add your voice to their sample set.

And now, for the topic most of the world cares the most: Futbol, Barça has announced that they want to start a club in Miami. Check Marca, NYTimes or, Straight from the Source.

Cargo Support for GlassFish v2
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

ALT DESCR

Kohsuke has added Cargo support for GlassFish v2. Cargo is a popular mechanism for automatic some container tasks; check out the website and their examples.

A direct motivator for Cargo support was Atlassian JIRA-14604 (see Atlassian Support for GF). We will see if it helps...

... JavaEE 6 Progress, IPS Wiki, Hudson and Windows, Graphical BPEL, and Sony PRS700 vs Kindle 2
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Radio Receiver Icon

Roberto has provided a Schedule Update for JavaEE 6. As a brief summary: JAX-RS is in Final Draft, EJB 3.1 in Public Draft, and the remaining specs will also be in PD by end of October, and all the specs are planned to be final by JavaOne 09 (June 2-5, 2009).

Chris, in the UC2 team, has announced a new user-focused site for the multi-platform IPS-based tool. The IPSBestPractices site resides at Wikis.Sun.Com where it can leverage additional functional facilities and (equally more important) improved availability.

The latest Hudson builds (Download, ChangeLog) have new facilities for self-installing on Windows servers. Check Kohsuke's entries on Hudson 1.253 (the latest is 1.255) and Installing Hudson on Windows Got Easier.

BPEL is a key tool for users of tools like GlassFish ESB (site) but, as Adam points out, its diagrams are not necessarily at the ideal level. So, he has been exploring how to overlay some SVG diagrams over the BPEL ones. Check out Adam's Graphical Monitoring for BPEL 2 and give him feedback.

Finally, the retailers are already getting ready for Christmas so we are seeing the last batch of consumer-focused devices, including the latest E-Books: Sony's PRS 700 and Amazon's Kindle 2. The Sony looks prettier and has a touch-screen, but the G3 purchase connectivity of the Kindle is still very compelling. We will see...

IBM and Standards on Standards
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

ALT DESCR

The NY Times reported on an IBM effort to "(increase) standards transparency, fairness and quality". Check out the Standards Page@IBM and the Standards For Standards document.

The news was also reported at CNet, SlashDot and Groklaw, and several mention the recent FastTrack vote on OOXML (and at least one also mentions the WS-I). My kudos to IBM, I think this is a good move.

Incidentally, the JCP is also trying to improve transparency in general, and several of us are trying to contribute to that where we can. Baby Steps; eventually we will get there...

... Ajax and NB, Mural and MDM, RESTful Comet, GF with Hibernate and MySQL, OpenSource Contributors, Grizzlies, Fast JavaScript and more iPhone Rejections
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Radio Receiver Icon

The NetBeans folks have a new Introductory Tutorial to Ajax, now updated to the forthcoming NetBeans 6.5.

Srenga points that the DataMashup Service Engine from Mural is Part of GlassFish ESB and also points to Manish's Tutorial on building a Server-Side Data Mashup.

From Carol a Screencast on RESTful Comet, based on her previous posts.

From Peter Mularien a look at Who is Contributing to SpringSource? using FishEye on SpringFrameworks Core. BTW, if you do the same with GlassFish (core) you will find mostly Sun folks; the bulk of the non-Sun contribution is in the smaller, reusable components, like grizzly, which makes sense as that's where people want their specific features in.

From apaspai a description of how to configure GlassFish with Hibernate and MySQL (in Spanish, sorry, I couldn't resist).

From Montana Grizzlies are Rebounding from Extinction (there were already very healthy On the Web, in Canada, and, more recently, also in Prague!). And, from the WebKit folks, reports of substantial improvements on JavaScript interpretation using SquirrelFish Extreme.

And Apple does it Again, this time with Mail, and it Gets Slashdotted.

  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Two news from OpenESB - first a partnership with ComplexEvents.Com in the area of Complex Event Processing (thanks, Prashant). The second is the announcement of an Scheduler Service Engine using OpenSymphony Quartz.

Arun has done an update of one of his early Tip Of The Day, showing how to do JDBC Connection Pooling in Rails for GlassFish v3.

And, from Conference-Land: Kohsuke is in Brazil right now at JustJava - look for him in the Agenda, (but, no, he is not presenting in Brazilian Brazilian Portuguese, somebody will translate!) Alexis will be next week in Oslo at JavaZone, and then it will be Arun's turn, again in Brazil. Check Alexis's September's Conference Recap.

Stésud, GlassFish and MySQL - A Multi-Million Sun Deal
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

ALT DESCR

This morning Sun issued a Press Release (Sun, Reuters) on a multi-million dollar deal with Belgium-based ERP vendor Stésud s.a.. Quoting from there:

Java-based GlassFish was the first piece of the puzzle we identified to meet our stringent new infrastructure requirements. As soon as Sun acquired MySQL, we decided to employ it as our new database rather than Oracle. With Sun behind both GlassFish and MySQL, it was the best open source infrastructure combination for our needs and for our customers' operations.

You can read about more adoption at our informal Stories blog and at the more formal Customer Success Stories site.

... Facelets, OpenSocial and Shindig, Mango, JavaEE Workshop, Mitel and Dtrace
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Radio Receiver Icon

Jeffrey reports that the trunk of NetBeans 6.5 now includes Facelets Support. The plan is for JSF 2.0 to include a presentation language evolved from Facelets; see Ed's latest post.

Jamey reports that OpenSocial 0.8.1 is ready and Shindig 1.0 is very close. Good news for SocialSite as it relies on both.

From Adam an announcement of a JavaEE Workshop. Adam says he is writing a book for O'Reilly - will check out with him, but I presume it is based on GlassFish Server.

And a new acronym from Yip-Hin: MANGO, as in My SQL And Netbeans, Glassfish and Open. First time I hear it; cute name, but all I know is this entry.

From Canada news of a partnership between Mitel and Sun that's leveraging VoIP and Sun's thin client technology (SunRays); see Partnership Description.

And The Observatory continues with their series on reasons to use OpenSolaris; number 2 is DTrace.

... Metro and JAXB, Sahoo, NetBeans 6.5, SpringSource, OpenDS, and Wonderland and Blender
  Posted by pelegri in CommunityService

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Radio Receiver Icon

From Jitu, a description of how to use JAXBContext in Metro.

From the SDN Team, it is Sahoo's turn to have his 15 Minutes of Fame; check out Janice's Interview where they cover many topics, from working from India, to OSGi.

Davis has a short note showing how to get started with a Servlet App using GFv3 Prelude in NetBeans 6.5.

The ever-observant Adam asks whether SpringSource is Working on EJB 3.1. Not sure if he is reading a bit too much into the tealeaves, or whether somebody had an oops...

From OpenDS community, Terry reports on his OpenDS Access Log Analyzer WebApp, intended for a future putback into OpenDS. And, a very complimentary testimonial about the ease of installation of OpenDS from KR in his OpenDS in 5 Minutes.

And, from Wonderland they have started creating a new, high quality, public world (see WonderBlog and Angad). A nice part is that they are going to be using Blender for the graphics. Blender is an open source tool that seems to be gaining adoption, the results are very good - see for instance the trailer for The Big Buck Bunny. Blender is also a Sun offering at Network.Com/Apps/Blender (thanks to Kevin for the tip).
