I've never been at Oracle OpenWorld so I'm very curious about how it feels. In preparation, yesterday I poked around a bit and found several videos that may (or not, we will see) convey a bit the mood... check them out and let me know what you think. If you only have time for one, I recommend the last one.

Keynote Preview Series:
Applications,
Virtualization,
DataBases,
Middleware.

The main blog for OpenWorld is Oracle OpenWorld and there will be live streamcasting of multiple events at OpenWorld Live.

I recently bought my first smartphone and I chose a BlackBerry Tour because it has a keyboard and I wanted to keep up w/ my kid's SMS typing... The latest goodie for the BB is the BB Messenger 5.0 which can generate and scan PINs encoded as QR Codes. Turns out these codes seem to be extremely popular in some markets and may catch up in the others... Soo, I generated codes for GlassFish.org (QR Code) and TheAquarium (QR Code). And, if you want to generate QR Codes, I found i-nigma useful. |

The 2009 JCP Elections are here. The JCP has been trying to improve transparency with the new JSR 215 rules (JCP 2.7 MR); now it is your turn. Between now and Oct 14th you can nominate names for the two open seats (Java SE/EE and Java ME) here. Then, from Nov 20th til Oct 2nd, you can vote on the seats. |
Check out the Call for votes and the Election Overview.
As we reported yesterday, Java.Net is under a DDOS attack (seems somewhat similar to this one). The Sun and CollabNet teams are working hard to address this but it's taking longer than we all want, so here are a few useful links that apply to GlassFish and Hudson.
|
First, because the services used by our projects come from multiple infrastructures, some sites have not been affected (knock on wood - or toca ferro). The following seem to be unaffected:
•
wikis.glassfish.org,
wiki.hudson-ci.org/,
maps.glassfish.org/server
|
For the case of Hudson, there is a run-time impact due to the plugin-store which has been addressed in the latest build, but see Dealing with Outages, and also see this discussion of longer-term solutions.
I'll add more useful links as I find them / people report them to me. Thanks for your patience while we deal with this situation.

I have mixed feelings about the current arrangement of Twitter widgets at TheAquarium. I like that they help me track conversations and discover news and opinions but the widget takes some time to load and too often the content is blank - I assume infrastructure problems, which they now have money to fix. A reader recently complained about the widgets and I promised to collect feedback via a survey. So, if you care about the widgets, one way or the other, please go fill in this 3-question Survey... |

Oracle has posted an FAQ on the Sun Oracle Exadata Storage Server that's worth a check. It's full of interesting bits; the first one that caught my attention was:
Q: Can the Sun Oracle Exadata Storage Server hardware or software be modified or customized?
|
|
Go to the front page of Sun.com and Follow the link for an invitation to this Event on Tuesday. You're Invited to See the World's First OLTP Database Machine With FlashFire Technology Hosted by Larry Ellison; John Fowler will also attend. |
|
The boards of directors for both companies Approved the Sun-Oracle Deal, Sun's Shareholders Approved it and the US DoJ Approved it, but the European Union is still investigating. The EU Commission is the executive branch of the EU and its cabinet has 27 Commissioners. Of these, Neelie Kroes (@Wikipedia, @CNet) is the Commissioner for Competition and her office just announced an In-Depth Investigation (also see NYTimes). As they say, story evolving... |
Related news are tagged Sun+Oracle. I also post links to related industry news at TheAquarium@Twitter.
Added I've not done any systematic tracking of how the press is reacting to this announcement, but the sources I follow are negative on the motivations spelled out in the EU ruling; see below for a few links:

Good old tools never die, like wget (and the beam torque wrench!). Gerry Haskins has written an overview on how to (continue to) use wget to access SunSolve repositories (where the For-Fee Patches for GlassFish are stored) now that authentication is enforced. The short summary is "Use versions 1.10.x and 1.11.1, but not 1.11!", but Gerry gets into more details. You can also look at the Document at SunSolve. |

Oracle's web site is running a teaser on Sun + Oracle is Faster that says: Check back on October 14 as we demonstrate Oracle's commitment to Sun hardware and Sun SPARC. October 11-15 is Oracle OpenWorld, which is held at Moscone Center, like like JavaOne. Unlike J1, the bulk of the presentations at OW are about the Oracle Applications (Wiki, General Sessions). OpenWorld does include a Developer Event that is happening at the Hilton Hotel, but all this is more than six weeks from now and we are Still Waiting, so we don't know if we will be able to Register as Employees, whether we should plan to give presentations, or who-knows-what... |
Added - Also see this message from Larry (I've been told it will run as an Ad in a few places, including the WSJ).

Earlier today (well, yesterday down under) ehCAChe maintainer and GlassFish good friend Greg Luck announced the "acquisition" of Ehcache by TerraCotta, another friendly GlassFish partner. This is giving Ehcache a business strategy, which it never had despite its popularity, in distributed caching. You can read more on TerraCotta's blog entries by Ari (founder, CTO) and Alex (aka Pure Danger). InfoQ also has a nice summary of the technical implications. |
Congratulations to both parties, they seem to share a lot of common values. If you're interested in the integration between GlassFish and those two sets of technologies, please visit :
• Ehcache - GlassFish HowTo & FAQ
• Previous coverage of Ehcache on TheAquarium, including the GlassFishTV episode (slides), and Ehcache server using GlassFish embedded, jersey and metro.
• Configuring GlassFish to Work with Terracotta and platform support.
Finally, make sure you read how to pronounce Ehcache properly and realize ehCAChe is actually a palindrome.

Further consolidation in the industry: VMware is acquiring SpringSource; see S2's Announcement (website is down; can't take the load?) and TSS Post. The Press Conference is in an hour or so (3:30pm PT); maybe more details then. |
Added
• The CTOs/CEOs speak:
Rod
(website down, can't take the load?)
and
Steve Harrod
(VMware CTO).
•
The usual pundits in the press:
Darry Taft @eWeek,
Paul Krill@Infoworld,
Gavin Clarke @ ElReg.
(I'll confess I'm puzzled - how can these guys not mention the impact on Oracle/Sun in these pieces?... sigh!)
Added - The "morning after" analysis is significantly better and worth commenting:
•
Cote@RedMonk - A good analysis emphasizing the public / private cloud possibilities, and the possible Java leadership angles. Let's see what Oracle does with its new assets when they get them...
•
Jay Lyman@451Group - A reasonable piece pointing out the industry moves.
•
Matt Assay@TheOpenRoad - Points out the increased pressure on RedHat - I agree, I think they will get acquired "soon" - and argues that S2's valuation would be much higher in a short time - I disagree, I think this is as good as they can get, although Hyperic was a very good move on their part.
We have been converting our distributions to leverage the new IPS format. Recent conversions to IPS include OpenMQ 4.4 and some distributions of GFv2.1 but the distribution with the largest volume remains GFv3 Preview.
The current release of GFv3 Preview uses pkg.sun.com/glassfish/v3/stable/. These packages were last updated before J1 (except docs) but we will soon push out an update based on an stable promoted build and when that happens you are likely to encounter the New SoftwareUpdate Tool.
|
The SoftwareUpdate tool provides a simplified interface to the standard UpdateTool, normally activated via a PopUp Notice. A single click Starts a Search for all the Apps that can be updated. Once Completed, choose the Apps you want to update, accept the license terms, and install. |
The SoftwareUpdate tool will report on the progress of the install: [1], [2], [3]. Once Completed you are done. The underlying machinery is the same used in the UpdateTool, and you can peek into the details, both before installing and after installing, but the SoftwareUpdate experience is faster and simpler, and more appropriate for most users.
IPS is one of the key new technologies that we are leveraging for
GlassFish v3;

Mark announced the availability of JDK 7 M4 (downloads) which is roughly mid-way through the Milestone RoadMap. |
M8 is the last milestone, due in early Jan'10, then are RCs and Final releases. That would give plenty of time before J1'10, except that some details are still pending...
The Feature List is quite interesting. Besides features I already knew about, like G1 GC and InvokeDynamic Support, the list includes a couple of new Network APIs SCTP (Wikipedia) and SDP (Wikipedia) and ECC Support.

JSF 2.0 continues to show signs of good adoption in the enterprise world. From IBM's DeveloperWorks, David Geary has posted JSF 2 Fu, Part 3. And, from the other side, Andy Schwartz, Oracle's rep to JSR-314, has now published a very nice and complete What’s New in JSF 2?. |
