Patch 5 for GlassFish v2.1 Now Available
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

The latest sustaining (for-fee) release of the GlassFish Server is now available: GFv2.1p5 fixes 27 new bugs GFv2.1p5 is also a patch release (p11) for the earlier GFv2U2; collectively all the patch releases in that family addressed 211 bugs.

Sustaining releases are available at the Basic level of Sun GlassFish Portfolio; higher subscription levels entitle different levels of customer support and access to the GlassFish Enterprise Manager

Recall that all our bug fixes also get incorporated into the next public release, in this case GFv2.1.1; patches give our customers the benefits of timely releases and isolated bug fixes; check Sun's GlassFish Support Model for more details.

For visual impact, below is the cumulative list of all the bugs fixed in this patch release since GFv2U2:

Towards GlassFish v3 fcs - Monitoring and New Enterprise Manager Features
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

One of the areas that has been improved significantly in GlassFish v3 is monitoring - see Prashanth's Functionality Overview. Most of the functionality is in the core product but some added value features will be part of the next version of the GlassFish Enterprise Manager available through Sun's commercial Sun GlassFish Portfolio.

Two recent posts by Sreeni explain how to use the new functionality to Enable/disable monitoring and attach Btrace-agent and to Create pluggable container-monitoring elements. The new monitoring functionality can also be used with JRuby, as Arun describes in How to monitor a Rails app using asadmin, JavaScript, jConsole, REST.

We are all looking forward towards GlassFish v3 FCS!

Redeployment Speed Survey (from JRebel)
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

The guys at ZeroTurnaround (makers of JRebel) have been running a survey on redeploy and restart turnaround time in Java App Servers that has >1100 responses so far. The survey's 3 questions ask about AppServer usage and redeploy and restart time.

Although doing a good survey is tricky - for example, in this case the sample is self-selected (but not as bad as with the Reader's Choice), the impact of (Re)Deployment tooling/configurations is unknown and the time is estimated, not measured - I think this one is useful in calling attention to the importance of the full develop/deploy/debug cycle. GFv2 did very well and v3 is even faster!

Jevgeni's analysis has some reasonable comments although some others seem unwarranted by the data. The most popular containers were Tomcat (29%), JBoss (25%), WLS (13%), WAS (12%) and GF (10%) (OC4J is 4%), with the caveat about self-selected samples. As a reminder of the importance of methodology, I'll point out that only 1 respondent listed Geronimo; readers may compare to that EDC Survey from Last Year.

Also note the impact of twitter and reddit in the comment thread - there are 117 comments as of this post... almost all of them very short 'heads-up' with no added value - sigh...

Latest Eclipse Plugin Now Available (1.0.33)
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

The GlassFish Tools Bundle for Eclipse is our all-in-one bundle that includes the Eclipse IDE (wiki) - the main alternative to that other IDE - the GlassFish Server and the GlassFish Plugin (home, intro), all in a single download.

The GlassFish Plugin is updated quite frequently but, fortunately, it is quite easy to update the plugin from the bundle so you don't have to do a full-reinstall. The latest versions of the plugins are 1.0.32 (9/4/09) and 1.0.33 (9/11/09) - that's just a week apart - and a full list of changes is always available through the Release Notes.

Although WTP's support for Java EE 6 has been Delayed until mid-2010 the GlassFish plugin provides critical Java EE 6 wizards - see Arun's latest entry in his TOTD series: Java EE 6 (Servlet 3.0 and EJB 3.1) wizards in Eclipse - and additional wizards are planned by GlassFish v3 FCS.

These plugins can be installed on Eclipse 3.4 Ganymede and Eclipse 3.5 Galileo. Galileo seems to have a nice set of features (Wiki, blogathon, DZone) and a co-bundle of Eclipse 3.5.1, GlassFish v3 and the latest plugins will be available when GlassFish v3 ships.

Towards GlassFish v3 fcs - FindBugs Push...
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

As we get closer to GlassFish v3 FCS, the development is moving into cleanup stage - and with high volume, see the DEV alias. Part of the cleanup is the usual bug fixing, part is an Increased Testing via FishCAT and part is general code quality cleanup via tools like FindBugs.

FindBugs is particularly useful because it helps to find new bugs and prevents future bugs. FindBugs is integrated into the development cycle through a Hudson job; see High Priority FindBugs. The FindBugs cleanup phase started recently (see FindBugs thread), but the Trend Chart shows the progress.

Shoal 1.1 is here!
  Posted by alexismp in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

Project Shoal is the GMS (Group Management System) technology behind the GlassFish 2.x and Sailfin clustering features but it is also a standalone project which has just shipped version 1.1 (announcement).

New features include new health state and client notifications, diagnostics, failure detection and scalability enhancements, as well as an experimental cross subnet support. The list of fixed bugs is pretty long (thanks to the GlassFish and Sailfin teams and to everyone filing issues).

Code (binary and source) and documentation are all available today. Check out Shreedhar's post on this release.

This shoal 1.1 release is already integrated in the upcoming GlassFish v2.1.1 and Sailfin v2 products (both will ship simultaneously). Check out related blog posts tagged with shoal.

Elvis... or Mort? Monitoring and Admin Commands in GlassFish v3
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

I've been enlightened. A while ago - I just checked, it was actually 2006! - I read Cay's Elvis Meets GlassFish and I thought it was a cute reference to The King. Then yesterday I noticed that Byron's Mort Learns Monitoring and Administration Commands and I thought it was about Terri Prachett's Mort...

Well, turns out I was wrong and they are about Mort, Elvis and Einstein, which are personas for developer classes that were used at Microsoft (we had our own back in DevPro); check out Wesner Moise's note, Nikhil Kothari's explanation and Jeff Atwood's update...

So, now that I've been educated, check Byron's posts for Mort, the opportunistic developer:

Mort Learns JDBC
Mort learns JDBC Realm Authentication,
Mort learns Monitoring and Administration Commands

PS. Does anybody know where "Mort" comes from? The other two are clear, even to a guy that was not born in the US :-)

Choosing The Right GlassFish v3 Bundle For You
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

GlassFish v3 is available in a number of download bundles. The bundles are available at different locations: the Community Download Page and the JavaEE Preview SDK, with different installer technologies: ZIP file or an installer and with different feature sets: Web or Full Profile.

Alexis has written a good summary of the issues involved to help you navigate through these options. Check it out, and continue to get ready for the GF v3 fcs release.

JavaZone 2009 - GlassFish and Hudson
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

JavaZone 2009 is this week, Sept 9-10th, at Oslo Spektrum. It looks like a nice venue, see Wikipedia and Bird's Eye, and they do all sorts of events, from Tom Jones to Muse.

It looks like a great conference; like last year, Alexis will be there presenting on GlassFish v3 and this year Kohsuke will also attend to present on Hudson.

For a full list of the presentations, check out the Agenda and the List of Sessions.

Agile Development is very well represented in the conference, see among others:

JSR 299 and 330 progress in latest GlassFish v3
  Posted by alexismp in GlassFish

Code snippet

As previously reported last month, JavaEE 6 will include JSR330 and JSR299. Roger Kitain already has a simple yet detailed blog entry on using JCDI (JSR 299, ex-WebBeans) in GlassFish. He walks through JSF 2.0 and JSR 299/JSR 330 code. You'll see there @Inject, @Qualifier, @SessionScoped, @ApplicationScoped, all in action.

If you're curious enough to test this sample, I would recommend using NetBeans 6.8 M1 - register a recent GlassFish v3 build (promoted build web 62 for instance), create a Web Application with Java EE 6 as the platform level and copy paste the various pieces. No further settings are required.

Overall, this shows progress since Cay's previous entry on the topic. Other posts on similar topics are marked with the "jsr299" and "jsr330" tags. Keep an eye on Roger's blog for more entries on this topic.
