GlassFish ESB is getting closer to its release. Bill (the-blogger) leaks that the second Milestone is Available Early, including Data Mashups. Download Now!. Terracotta 2.7 is out with formal support for GlassFish Server. See the product page, the download page and Alex's post. John, at NetBeans, has a new demo showing how to Use EclipseLink via JPA on NetBeans 6.5. EclipseLink is included in the GlassFish v3 releases, including the imminent GlassFish v3 Prelude. Chinmayee, in Chennai (called Madras by the british) reports on a Presentation to Wipro last month. Wipro is one of the top (top 3?) IT companies in India, with over 100K employees. It's great to see increased adoption in India; like Brazil and China, these are rapidly growing markets - the biggest challenge with GlassFish is getting the word out. Dan is the author of Seam in Action and recently posted about Using Seam with GlassFish. An exchange with GlassFish team folks followed and Dan now has a Wishlist for GlassFish. Last week was the OpenSSO Ask-the-Experts, and, following that format, they have published the transcript for the session. Thanks to Rajeev for the tip |

From Ruby-land, Zargony is warming up to JRbuy and explains Why I'm starting to like JRuby even though I dislike Java. And Arun writes a short list of the Advantages of JRuby over MRI. We have been sending notifications to GAP (the GlassFish Awards Program) for a while but on MOnday we had a Press Release aligned with the first SunTech Days in Sao Paolo to celebrate the winners located in Brazil. Special congratulations to Claudio and Reginaldo who were at the event. We are planning a number of blogs to highlight the GAP winners; we won't be able to cover the 108 of them (!) but we will sample a few. And, Arun is visiting Sao Paolo (and other cities in Brazil) and writes about ES JUG... And about Embu das Artes and about Travel Tips in Brazil. Showing part of the spread of the Friends and Family part of the GlassFish Server two tutorials: First Sidharth and Marina show OpenSSO on GlassFish, and then Ludo points to John Yeary's Doing authentication and authorization with GlassFish and OpenDS. Giuseppe points out that the call for papers for the MySQL Users Conference is still open. |
PS. There is a lot of work to do before GFv3 prelude goes out; tracking the news during the next few weeks is going to be tricky, please bear with us.

Ludo has announced the release of the First Build of OpenDS 1.1. Download links for Core Server and DSML Gateway, or Java WebStart. Complete detailst at Ludo's blog or at the OpenDS 1.1 b1 website. GlassFish supports HTTP Compression and Shing Wai Describes in Detail how to configure compression, compressionMinSize, compressableMimeType and noCompressionUserAgents. This feature will be enabled in next month's GlassFish v3 Prelude release. Grizzly is moving forward along a Grizzly "classic" design (for GFv2 and GFv3 Prelude) and a Grizzly 2 "redesign", hopefully for GFv3 fcs (see the Webinar slides). The latest "classic" release, 1.8.6, is now available; check out JFA's Announcement for details. Ramesh has started a whole series on Fuji (aka OpenESB v3). If I correctly interpret the organization of his entries, point your browse to Master Entry and follow the links. Finally, in the intersection of Java and Blu-Ray, check out this article on Using JavaME in BD-J. The whole area of BD-J, Blu-Ray and BD live, and the growth of the PlayStation 3 seems a huge opportunity to me; but some key players would need to take some risks... |

Kohsuke is back from Brazil and has released Hudson 1.253 (will they ever get to Hudson 2?), now with improved support for Windows in Distributed Builds and also support for Parametrized Builds. More on the new SpringSource Enterprise Support. Ryan (a long-term user of the GlassFish Server) was considering purchasing enterprise support for SpringSource and writes about his experience and quoted price tag. Sun and Greenplum are setting up a very large data warehouse for Fox Interactive Media on top of Solaris, ZFS and a bunch of Thumpers. Check out Jonathan's Writeup and the joint Press Release Arun is still in Brazil for the rest of this week and next week. Today he was at DF JUG in Taguatinga. Kanthi at OpenDS explains the importance of Password Management in an LDAP server like OpenDS and points to a longer, more technical, description check out the corresponding Page at the OpenDS Wiki Kohsuke just came back from his 5-city, 7-talk Tour du Brasil. It surely looks like he had a lot of fun there, and reached out to many people. And Arun just arrived there! His first report is from the JUG in Brasilia, but he will stay there through next week, including the first Sun TechDay in Sao Paolo (check out the Schedule). Facelets is in JSF 2.0 - check out Chapter 10 in the EDR2 - but Arun has a detailed description of How to Use Facelets with JSF 1.2.. Ken (from Corba) is working with the Grizzly folks to try to incorporate the improved ByteBuffer management mechanism. Check out Ken's writeup, and, if you have questions, you can bring them in tomorrow's Webinar on Grizzly/Grizzly2. From the SocialSite group, first a How to Social Enable screencast, and here is a note on The Shinding Java Internals. And, finally, the tech news of the yesterday was the long-awaited release of android, the Google Phone. Sampling just few sources: LA Times on G1 vs iPhone, Hands-on video and Comparison Table. And the Google-Phone Blog. |

At MindBucket Paul provides a comparison of the (single-client) performance of Rails vs Merb. Rails is the incumbent in Ruby frameworks; Merb is a very interesting newcomer. Merb is thread-safe, and so will be Rails 2.0, but the comparison does not consider concurrency so that should be a key issue. The comparison includes numbers on GlassFish Server (and stay tuned for more fine-tuning for that case). From the NetBeans team, a Tutorial on Securing WebApps using Role-Based authentication. The tutorial has detailed step-by-step instructions using NetBeans 6.5 and GlassFish Server. Ludo addresses Rapid Deployment of Apps on GlassFish in a thread at the GlassFish Users Forum Also hints at future improvements (teaser!). Shay reports that Compass 2.1 M3 is now available with improved GlassFish support. From Mahipalsinh an explanation of how to Localize WebSynergy, so you can do it for your favorite language. And, on the section of important Industry News, Cisco buys Jabber, which should provide integrated IM in their offerings, and Amazon launches CDN service, a la Akamai, LimeLight and others. One of the nice things of working in this industry, it is never boring! |

Alexis reports from JavaZone about his presentation on Scripting in GlassFish v3 and reports it was Standing Room Only! JavaZone seems a Nice Conference; maybe Alexis will have some pics to post?. Also from Alexis, a quick recipe for Building GFv2 from Source, in response to some questions in the mailing lists. Be sure to check the comments for clarifications on testing configurations. John recently became a committer into Grizzly. He already contributed a tutorial on Writing a Protocol using Grizzly and now has mutated that into an implementation of HTTP Chunked Transfer Coding - see his writeup on Full Duplex communication. Alex de Marco followed on the free hosting offer from OStatic and already qualified and seems very happy... and, to, give back, he provides a Quick Start Guide on his virtualized container. Release Noises Galore: SpringSource is getting ready their Apache Tomcat-based server, now under the new name ofdm Server RC2... and JBoss now has a Java EE 5-Certified JBoss 5 RC2. I guess I could have filed this under the battle of the RC2s! S2 promises a final release in 2 weeks, JBoss in around 6 - we will see... And on the big-toys front, a new version of BlackBox, the MD D20. I initially thought it would be using a longer container but it is still a 20 footer, just with different internal layout - clearly customer-driven. See the Technical Specs and the overview from On The Record. |

Jacob explains the (simple) configuration options for JRuby Pool. Srenga does a Shallow Dive into Mural, the Open Source MDM engine in the GlassFish community. The JSR314 EG has released the Expert Draft 2 for JSF 2.0 (Download). This version includes Section 13.3 on JavaScript API (thanks for the tip, Roger), as well as Section 3.6 on Composite UI Components (see the Enterprise Tips on this feature: Part I and Part II). Our household owns several aging Apple laptops so I am keeping an eye on the MacBook Shipments rumor, although OpenSolaris continues to make progress and that may soon be a realistic option for us. Intel has announced the new high-end Dunnington processors ( InternetNews), and Sun already has machines to accompany them (Marketwatch). And in all the noise about the LHC I had missed that the CERN is Thumpers and StorageTek products to store the data - through the Customer Ready program. |

From the land of the JSF 2.0 Spec Ed is asking for feedback on the last list of JSF Features that are considered by the Expert Group. The Full List has 37 entries, of which 20 are Listed as Hard. Griffon is a Grails-like framework that uses Groovy and Swing for RIA. Geertjan has already written an Overview and now explains how to add support to it in NetBeans by Converting Grails to Griffon. Both NetBeans and GlassFish Server are very inclusive on the scripting front: a very warm welcome to our party! A quick heads-up from the Sailfin community: a last chance to enter the Sailfin/Ericsson Contest, the deadline is Sept 30th. Adam continues his advocacy for EJB 3.x, specially EJB 3.1 and points out that the implementation of EJB 3.1 is very small! Ken just told me that the EG is making good progress with the next public draft, so stay tuned on that front. Julien continues to work on IzPack for GlassFish (as time is available!) and now has a version using the IPS Packaging system and GlassFish v3. Check out JPZ's note, while ChrisK goes into More Dicussion of the IPS details. The download is here - Julien said he would try to get a new rev "soon"... And noises of unhappiness with the recent Rejection of Podcaster from the iTunes AppStore because: <quote>Since Podcaster assists in the distribution of podcasts, it duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes<\quote>. From OpenESB, the first milestone for GlassFIshESB. Andi will post a longer entry later in the weekend but in the meantime check the Announcement and the Welcome from Bill. Kenai beta is out, a very strong proof that JRuby on GlassFish (v2) is ready for the prime time. The event deserves a full spotlight and I'll do one this weekend. SocialSite continues making progress. Vijay provides a list of the projects Recent Changes which include a new security model, full support for OpenSocial RESTful APIs, and more. The team will also start following the GlassFish usual model of regular milestones. From OpenDS, Terry more reports on the Logger Analyzer. I need to spend more time in the OpenDS mailing lists - or convince Ludovic et al to blog more often! And, from Intel Dave a nice screencast describing Role of Wireless in OpenSolaris. Neat to see an Intel guy talking about your Intel centrino-based OpenSolaris laptop!. Yeah for OpenSource! |

From Patrice, we now have a Java CAPS 6 / SWIFT Demonstrator initially put together in Benelux and now ready to be shared with requesting customers (VirtualBox images included). From the other side of the Atlantic, Tom Barrett's Open ESB Tutorials are four detailed documents on getting started, tooling, event processing, and monitoring for OpenESB and Java CAPS release 6. Tom is asking for your feedback. Johan, a GlassFish pioneer and creator of Dali is reporting on the launch of vi.be, an online social music service powered by GlassFish and Dali. Rajeev shares his work on making OpenSSO Webstart Prototype : QuickSetup. Building on the GlassFish v3 embedded API, this provides OpenSSO users, testers, and demoers a very nice experience. |

From Jane, a report that GlassFish v3 now also supports the popular Closest Matching Commands from its predecessor, GFv2. Up in Castellers I posted preliminary download numbers for GlassFish Server. I regularly get surprised reactions when I point out that GlassFish has many more downloads than JBoss, so, if you are curious, check it out. A warm welcome to Bill Wilkins to the blogosphere. Bill is the director for SOABI at Sun and, thus, responsible for OpenESB. Check out his first three posts: Establishing OASIESB, Community Collaboration and Growing Our Appeal. From the Engadget - the land of toys - a report of TikiTag, RFID for the masses, which may even be useful for something besides Tagging cats :-) And, from CERN, the inventors of the World Wide Web, an invitation to a Live Broadcast of the First Bean of the Large Hadron Collider. See you at the WebCast, if the world does Not End Then!. |

From Rajeev, a report on an OpenSSO WebStart Prototype done through embedding GlassFish v3. Just click and go! A big change from a couple of years ago when installing and starting Sun's Access Manager was such a big task! And, from SuperPat a report on OpenSSO Integration with JIRA, done by Alexey. From Arun, trip reports on the RailsConf Europe 2008 at Berlin, Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3. The VirtualBox team has been very busy and they have Released VirtualBox 2.0 (Press Release). Check the Changelog and Download it. A change in this release is that, as with the strategy followed by the rest of our Open Source portfolio, VB 2.0 now has enterprise support. On the Storage side, a Press Release reporting that Sun's market share growth the last quarter grew almost 30% Y-to-Y (top in the industry). And this is w/o the OpenStorage systems getting readied, see ComputerWorld and NYTimes. And a very warm welcome back to Lew Tucker. Lew was in the original JavaSoft group and we overlapped briefly there. Sun has quite an open door policy to people who left (and bring back fresh experiences from outside). We even have coined a term for them: Boomerangs :-). |
