John, at NetBeans, has a new demo showing how to Use EclipseLink via JPA on NetBeans 6.5. EclipseLink is included in the GlassFish v3 releases, including the imminent GlassFish v3 Prelude.

Chinmayee, in Chennai (called Madras by the british) reports on a Presentation to Wipro last month. Wipro is one of the top (top 3?) IT companies in India, with over 100K employees. It's great to see increased adoption in India; like Brazil and China, these are rapidly growing markets - the biggest challenge with GlassFish is getting the word out.

We have been sending notifications to GAP (the GlassFish Awards Program) for a while but on MOnday we had a Press Release aligned with the first SunTech Days in Sao Paolo to celebrate the winners located in Brazil. Special congratulations to Claudio and Reginaldo who were at the event. We are planning a number of blogs to highlight the GAP winners; we won't be able to cover the 108 of them (!) but we will sample a few.

And, Arun is visiting Sao Paolo (and other cities in Brazil) and writes about ES JUG... And about Embu das Artes and about Travel Tips in Brazil.

GlassFish supports HTTP Compression and Shing Wai Describes in Detail how to configure compression, compressionMinSize, compressableMimeType and noCompressionUserAgents. This feature will be enabled in next month's GlassFish v3 Prelude release.

Grizzly is moving forward along a Grizzly "classic" design (for GFv2 and GFv3 Prelude) and a Grizzly 2 "redesign", hopefully for GFv3 fcs (see the Webinar slides). The latest "classic" release, 1.8.6, is now available; check out JFA's Announcement for details.

At MindBucket Paul provides a comparison of the (single-client) performance of Rails vs Merb. Rails is the incumbent in Ruby frameworks; Merb is a very interesting newcomer. Merb is thread-safe, and so will be Rails 2.0, but the comparison does not consider concurrency so that should be a key issue. The comparison includes numbers on GlassFish Server (and stay tuned for more fine-tuning for that case).

From the NetBeans team, a Tutorial on Securing WebApps using Role-Based authentication. The tutorial has detailed step-by-step instructions using NetBeans 6.5 and GlassFish Server.

Release Noises Galore: SpringSource is getting ready their Apache Tomcat-based server, now under the new name ofdm Server RC2... and JBoss now has a Java EE 5-Certified JBoss 5 RC2. I guess I could have filed this under the battle of the RC2s! S2 promises a final release in 2 weeks, JBoss in around 6 - we will see...

And on the big-toys front, a new version of BlackBox, the MD D20. I initially thought it would be using a longer container but it is still a 20 footer, just with different internal layout - clearly customer-driven. See the Technical Specs and the overview from On The Record.

The JSR314 EG has released the Expert Draft 2 for JSF 2.0 (Download). This version includes Section 13.3 on JavaScript API (thanks for the tip, Roger), as well as Section 3.6 on Composite UI Components (see the Enterprise Tips on this feature: Part I and Part II).

Our household owns several aging Apple laptops so I am keeping an eye on the MacBook Shipments rumor, although OpenSolaris continues to make progress and that may soon be a realistic option for us.

Intel has announced the new high-end Dunnington processors ( InternetNews), and Sun already has machines to accompany them (Marketwatch).

And in all the noise about the LHC I had missed that the CERN is Thumpers and StorageTek products to store the data - through the Customer Ready program.

From the land of the JSF 2.0 Spec Ed is asking for feedback on the last list of JSF Features that are considered by the Expert Group. The Full List has 37 entries, of which 20 are Listed as Hard.

Griffon is a Grails-like framework that uses Groovy and Swing for RIA. Geertjan has already written an Overview and now explains how to add support to it in NetBeans by Converting Grails to Griffon. Both NetBeans and GlassFish Server are very inclusive on the scripting front: a very warm welcome to our party!

A quick heads-up from the Sailfin community: a last chance to enter the Sailfin/Ericsson Contest, the deadline is Sept 30th.

Adam continues his advocacy for EJB 3.x, specially EJB 3.1 and points out that the implementation of EJB 3.1 is very small! Ken just told me that the EG is making good progress with the next public draft, so stay tuned on that front.

Julien continues to work on IzPack for GlassFish (as time is available!) and now has a version using the IPS Packaging system and GlassFish v3. Check out JPZ's note, while ChrisK goes into More Dicussion of the IPS details. The download is here - Julien said he would try to get a new rev "soon"...

Kenai beta is out, a very strong proof that JRuby on GlassFish (v2) is ready for the prime time. The event deserves a full spotlight and I'll do one this weekend.

SocialSite continues making progress. Vijay provides a list of the projects Recent Changes which include a new security model, full support for OpenSocial RESTful APIs, and more. The team will also start following the GlassFish usual model of regular milestones.

The VirtualBox team has been very busy and they have Released VirtualBox 2.0 (Press Release). Check the Changelog and Download it. A change in this release is that, as with the strategy followed by the rest of our Open Source portfolio, VB 2.0 now has enterprise support.

On the Storage side, a Press Release reporting that Sun's market share growth the last quarter grew almost 30% Y-to-Y (top in the industry). And this is w/o the OpenStorage systems getting readied, see ComputerWorld and NYTimes.

And a very warm welcome back to Lew Tucker. Lew was in the original JavaSoft group and we overlapped briefly there. Sun has quite an open door policy to people who left (and bring back fresh experiences from outside). We even have coined a term for them: Boomerangs :-).
