First GlassFish v3 Screencast
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

Version 3 in Web2.0 Style

It is still early in the cycle of GlassFish v3 but Jerome has a demo. All caveats apply, but if you are a hard-core geek you will want to check out the screencast and the blog.

GlassFish v3 is the future of GlassFish, we want a server-side Java container that will scale from very small to fully-featured, that loads services on demand, and has low resource comsumption. Loading on demand yields fast startup: Jerome's demo starts in less than a second.

Jerome will talk more about this at GlassFish Day and during JavaOne. A preemptive comment: our approach to modularization is very pragmatic, as described by Jerome in some of the comments in EclipseZone and elsewhere. In particular, we expect to support some level of OSGi or other but the details will depend on the technical discussion in the GlassFish community.

Comments:

I really do hope the GlassFish community will decide on modularity technology on technical grounds. As I don't follow the mailing lists, I'd love you to post a follow-up blog summarising the rationale for whatever technology you decide to use. Apart from helping to make the modularity discussion more objective, this exercise should be a valuable source of requirements for OSGi/JSR 291, JSR 277, and JSR 294.

I'd be interested in knowing how I can participate in the technical discussion in the GlassFish community. Are there web-based forums or mailing lists for discussing these issues?

Glyn - Good idea. I'll encourage Jerome to summarize discussions as they progress, and I'll do a spotlight on them. - eduard/o

Alex - The DEV alias carries quite a bit of technical discussions for the current release. Jerome is planning a new set of discussions on the Modular System/V3 but we were thinking of a more memorable name than "modsys" and we are waiting on a trademark check (one of the consequences/benefits of working in a large company with processes for things like this). I'll do a spotlight when we settle the mailing list, which I hope will be very soon. - eduard/o

You mean the dev@ mailing list shown on https://glassfish.dev.java.net/servlets/ProjectMailingListList? I don't have access to join that list.

Hi Alex - You need to be logged into Java.Net to be able to join the mailing lists. Try that and let me know if you still have problems. - eduard/o
